“Listen,” he says, leaning closer. As if he really is sharing a secret.
“The only people who know Eve is your step sister is us, right? The family. And a couple of staff, so big deal.”
I feel my jaw hanging open. Like I'm hearing music for the first time, or seeing color after living in a black and white photograph.
“Soooo-?” I venture. Wondering what he has in mind to make my biggest problem not only vanish, but appealing to the world.
“She’s Trinity’sgod-daughter. No relation. And even if it did come out, which it won't. You haven't broken any laws. She’s eighteen and you're rich as fuck. We can do whatever we want or had you forgotten that part?” he says with a mischievous smile.
“I- I know all that… But I just thought-” I try to say, realizing now I don't know what I thought. I was just acting on impulse keeping Eve and me a secret. Felt like I had to.
Dad takes a long breath in. “Son. I know if your mother was still here, she’d say the same thing I'm about to tell you… It’s not about the money, the power or the prestige. And believe it or not, it
S not about the pussy either,” he remarks, making me frown.
But he's right when he adds, “Hey! If anyone would know, it's me. What I mean is son, is that it’s what and how we feel in here that counts… How we love those we can’t help but love. That’s all that really matters.”
“And you think I’m in love with Eve!?” I exclaim, giving denial one last shot on account of the shame of being unmasked by my father over something he’s been okay with all along.
“Cut the crap, Zeke. I know you are. But does she? I mean does she really know how much you love her?”
I know he knows the answer as well as I do. But I nod anyway, crimping a smile.
“I just can't believe you knew… That you're totally fine with it.” I add again, still shaking my head.
“Plus.” My dad chimes in, always having to have the last word, “She’s never taken that diamond bracelet off, not even for a second. The way I see you look at her, the way you both look at each other, then that damned bracelet? It’s pretty obvious.” He shrugs, checking his own custom timepiece.
Slapping my knee before I help him up out of his chair.
“Good talk son. Just don't keep the baby news from us that long, huh? This old heart of mine can only take so many surprises.”
The sound of the front door opening then slamming makes us both jump.
Eve’s clip-clop step across the marbled floors more familiar to me than I thought until just now.
“Daddy! Daddy!” She cries out, making me give an awkward smile and little shrug of my own when my dad frowns at me, mouthing the word daddy?
“It’s her thing… I just play along,” I explain quickly.
But Eve says more than words ever could once she fills the doorway to my study. Not realizing I have company until it's too late.

So yeah. That baby news my dad just cautioned me about?
