We’re almost at his Maserati when my phone buzzes in my pocket.

Unable to ignore it, I pull it free and wake the screen up. The words that stare back at me make my breath catch and my chest constrict.

Siren: Give ’em hell, soldier.

“You okay?” Jodie asks as I slip my phone back into my bag and rest my head back, staring up at the black ceiling above me.

“Yeah,” I breathe.

“They know what they’re doing. You have to trust them.”

“I do. Everything will be fine,” I say, thinking of Calli’s words from my room earlier.

Lifting my head, I look around my best friend and find Calli’s concerned blue eyes.

“You good?” I ask as she instinctively lifts her hand and rests it against her stomach.

She nods, her eyes filling with tears that I can only assume she’s trying to fight.

“Umm… what Nico said earlier,” Jodie starts as she follows my line of sight, “about you not drinking…”

“Fucking idiot,” Calli mutters, much to my amusement.

“It’s true… you’re—”

“Yeah,” Calli agrees. “The others don’t know yet, though, so—”

“My lips are sealed,” Jodie promises before she turns to me. “Can you believe this?” she asks excitedly before her face drops with realisation. “You knew.”

“I did.”

Her lips part to say something, but a heavy sigh passes them instead, and she slumps down in her seat a little.

“I guess that all makes a lot of sense,” she muses.

“My brother is an idiot.”

“Can’t argue there, Cal,” Jodie confesses. “But he’s so much more than that.”

“Yeah, that too.”

Silence falls around us as we’re driven across the city.

We have no idea where we’re going, and I can only assume there is a reason for that, so I just sit back and trust that the guys know what they’re doing. The women in these two cars are the most important in their lives. They wouldn’t risk them for anything.

Jodie and Calli eventually pick their previous conversation back up when Jodie’s curiosity over Calli’s pregnancy gets the better of her and she begins asking all the standard questions. But I don’t join in; I’m too lost in my own head, which is filled with images of Nico dressed up like the brutal soldier that he is.

The sight of him standing beside Theo as they stepped out of that lift made my heart stop, I’m fucking sure of it.

Dangerous. Formidable. Gorgeous.

And all mine, if I want him.

Although, wanting him isn’t really in question here. I’ve wanted him since the first night I laid eyes on him. Who wouldn’t? He’s hot as hell. But embarking on regular hookups and allowing it to turn into something more is my sticking point.
