My eyes burn with tears as I nod in agreement.

“Those boys are out there fighting for all of us. It’s scary, and terrifying, and I’m freaking the fuck out right now. But it’s what they’ve got to do to protect their family, and we’ve got to do whatever we can to support them. And if that means we lock ourselves in there and wait it out, then that’s what we’ll do. We stick together.”

“No matter what,” Calli adds. “And when they’re back, he’s going to need you, Bri. Whether they’ve succeeded or failed at getting to Ricardo, he’s going to need you in a way that scares him just as much as it does you.”

“Jesus,” I mutter, giving up on trying to contain my tears and instead swiping them from my cheeks.

“Come on, let’s go check this place out,” Jodie encourages. “I could certainly think of worse places to wait.”

As Calli pushes the door open, movement outside my window catches my attention and I find Stella, Emmie and Rhea waiting for us.

“I totally made the right choice skipping school today,” Rhea tells me happily, all of them thankfully ignoring the fact I’m teetering on the edge of an emotional breakdown.

“Do your parents know where you are?”

“All right, calm down, Miss Andrews. Jeez.”

“The guys have sorted it,” Emmie assures me. “We just need to keep her out of trouble.”

Stella snorts a laugh.

“What? I’m an angel.”

“So are we,” Stella says with a wide, menacing smile.

“Christ, all of you are going to stay out of trouble,” Calli warns, pulling rank as the sensible one. I guess she is closest in line to leadership here. Or is that Rhea? Fuck if I know.

Our drivers grab our bags from the cars and they trail behind us like good little puppies so we can check-in.

The second Calli and Emmie walk through the huge doors, the two women behind the desk rise to their feet.

“Good afternoon, ladies. We’re glad to have you with us. Everything has already been organised for you. If you would like to follow, I’ll take you up to your suite.”

I share a look with Jodie as one of them slips from behind the huge mahogany desk they were sitting at and gestures for us to follow her.

I have no idea if they know who we are. From the situation we’re in, I’d suggest not. But it’s clear they think we’re some kind of royalty.

We step into the most insane lift I’ve ever experienced in my life. And while I try to ignore my reflection, knowing that my face is going to be red and puffy from crying, and the fact I couldn’t look like I belong here less in my pyjamas, it’s impossible not to see myself. The walls are mirrored and even the gold decoration is so shiny our reflections are more than obvious.

We ride right to the top of the building before the doors open and we spill out onto thick, luxury purple carpet and follow the sharply suited woman to a massive set of intricately carved doors.

Our drivers diligently follow us with our bags, having refused to hand them over to the porter in the lobby.

“Here you go, ladies. If you need anything, just press one on the phone and we’ll be able to assist you.”

She holds the door open and I hang back with Jodie as the others rush into the room to check it out.

“Who could have predicted how our lives were gonna turn out, huh?” she asks beside me as we follow behind.

“Holy shit,” I gasp, my eyes darting around the colossal room. It’s bigger than most people’s houses.

“This is our most exclusive suite. Six bedrooms lead from both the main room and that hallway,” the receptionist says.

“Shouldn’t the happy couple be in here?” Jodie asks, echoing my thoughts.

“It was out of their budget.”

“How much is this place?”
