We discussed other options. Many were keen to ambush them on the way in, take them all out in one fell swoop, but we quickly agreed that wouldn’t be the best way to handle this. Firstly, I don’t want Ricardo to die from a distance. I want to look him deep in the eyes as I put an end to his miserable existence. And second, Enzo is going to be with them. He’s a part of Ricardo’s inner circle, just like his brother, who we’ve all slated to take the reins over there once the power-hungry oldest Mariano sibling is out of the equation. And after everything Ant and Enzo have done for us… well, even our dark and twisted hearts couldn’t cast them aside in favour of our need for vengeance.

Jumping to my feet, I follow Theo’s move and have my gun in hand, ready for action as we stand there shoulder to shoulder.

Nothing but silence and the sound of our increased heart rates can be heard as we wait.

“Are your comms on?” Theo asks after tapping his ear.

“No, there’s nothing,” I confess, pulling the small device from my ear to inspect it.

“Shit,” Theo hisses. “We must be out of range.”

“I thought these were the shit?”

“Yeah, well. Clearly fucking not.”

Ripping his own device out, he throws it across the room in frustration. It collides with the wall before bouncing across the floor.

Anger and frustration come off him in waves.

“We’re ready for this, man. Chill,” I say.

His eyes find mine, and I swallow as I find them full of emotion that he’s usually able to lock down.

“I want this for you, cuz. I don’t want anything to fuck this up.”

“We don’t need comms. We’ll hear them coming and we’ll make them our little bitches.”

He nods once, blinking away that unusual show of his true feelings, pulling his stone-cold mask back on.

With our stares locked on the closed door before us, we wait. And wait. And wait.

Without any communication from those who can see what’s going on, we can only assume that they’re searching what they think is an abandoned warehouse. Well, abandoned bar the prisoners they’re hunting for.

If they’re smart, they might realise it’s a set-up when they discover there is no one on guard. But other than putting someone in the firing line, we’d be risking the life of someone too important if they were to put them out there to be found first.

A loud bang somewhere beyond the door is our first clue that they’re getting close. The second is their loud yet muffled voices.

Oh yeah, they’re fucking pissed.

Good. It’ll only make the end of this so much sweeter.

Adrenaline shoots through my veins when the sound of footsteps hits my ears.

We have no idea how many are out there. We could be evenly matched, or we could be well outnumbered.

Honestly, it doesn’t matter. Theo and I have enough hate for these cunts between us to take their entire family down. Or at least, that’s what I like to tell myself.

We move into position on either side of the door, fingers on triggers and ready for some action as the footsteps get louder.

We look at each other, a silent agreement passing between us before they come to a stop on the other side.

“This is the final room, Boss,” a heavily accented voice says.

“They’re not here,” he states confidently. “Motherfuckers have been playing us.”

My heart drops at the thought of them turning around and walking away.

“They’re waiting for us.”
