“No buts. Brianna and me… it’s—”

“Inevitable?”

“A bit of fun. Now you’re popping out heirs, I don’t need to, so the pressure’s off, right?”

I’d have thought those words would come as a relief. I’m sure if I had said them any time previously, then they would have been. But right now, all I feel is the pang of disappointment.

Do I want that? A future with a wife and kids. Do I want to make my old family home my future family home and try not to make the same mistakes our parents did with us?

“Are you going to kick Mum out and move in so you have space?” I blurt, a weird panic hitting me that we’re going to fight over that place.

“Hell no. We’re good here.”

“But it’s a flat,” I argue for some unknown reason.

“It’s bigger than most London homes. We’re good.”

“The house is all yours. You just need to off your bitch of a mother first,” Daemon sneers.

“Surprised you haven’t taken her off my hands as well,” I deadpan.

“Nah, that bitch is all yours when you feel the time is right.”

I shake my head, wondering for the millionth time what my father was thinking, putting up with her cold arse for so long.

It makes me wonder if she was always so detached. I don’t remember it to the level we’ve experienced recently, but she was never exactly a hands-on mum, preferring to leave us in the hands of nannies and housekeepers. But I’m sure she used to show us she cared. Or is that just my twisted imagination?

“Thanks. Such a gift,” I mutter before saying some words I never thought would leave my lips. “Take my sister back to bed. She’s exhausted.”

“With pleasure, man. It’s my favourite place to be.”

“I’ll talk to you tomorrow, Cal.” She smiles sleepily at me before Daemon sweeps her up into his arms and carries her down toward their bedroom, leaving me standing there with an unrelenting ache in my heart.

I leave their flat only a few seconds later.

I should turn toward the lift to take me back upstairs. But I don’t. While my head might tell me to go that way, my legs take me in an entirely different direction.

I enter Toby’s flat a little calmer than I did Daemon’s. But that doesn’t mean my heart is pounding slower or my hands aren’t shaking.

My sister is pregnant. With an actual fucking baby.

And Brianna knew this whole time and never so much as hinted a word.

I suck in a calming breath as I try to squash the anger that continues to threaten.

I am pissed, but I’m also aware that she was right with what she hissed at me as she fled the library last week.

My sister is proof that we can trust her.

She could have sold us so far down the river by now that we’d have all long drowned. But she hasn’t. She’s here. She’s with us.

She’s one of us.

I’m a nervous fucking wreck by the time I reach out and wrap my fingers around the door handle.

Darkness greets me as I slip inside and pad toward the chair in the corner that’s angled to allow me to watch her sleep.

With my eyes locked on the lump in the bed which is my siren, I lower my arse and rest back.
