It was me. I was the one who ripped my insides in two by sending him away.

“Are you done in here?” she asks, watching me through concerned eyes.

“Yeah,” I whisper. No sooner has the word fallen from my lips that she stands, turning the shower off and reaching for one of Toby’s massive, fluffy towels to wrap me in.

“Come on.” She takes my hand and leads me through to the bedroom and pulls the vanity stool out. “Sit.”

I do as I’m told, too emotionally spent to do anything else.

After cleaning my face with a wipe, she applies my moisturiser before setting about taming the mess that is my hair.

It was pretty fucked up after Nico’s visit, and the shower, minus shampoo and conditioner, didn’t really help matters.

She works through the knots gently, her silent support wrapping around me like a warm hug.

Once she’s happy, she squeezes out the excess water and reaches for the hairdryer—something that I can’t imagine was in here until she moved into Toby’s bachelor pad.

She works meticulously, drying and straightening in the way she knows I like but never have time to do.

My eyes get heavier and heavier as she works, my need to curl back up in bed and pass out getting stronger by the second.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Jodie eventually asks when she’s finished, placing the dryer and brush down.

“There’s nothing really to tell. He remembered some stuff from Friday night and came to talk to me about it,” I confess, not willing to go into details. Avoiding her intrigued stare, I stand and walk to the dresser for clean pyjamas.

“Didn’t sound like there was much talking going on from our room,” she teases. “Did he remember why he flew off the handle?” she asks once I’m in bed.

“Yeah.”

“And you’re still not going to tell me,” she surmises, a little hurt flicking through her eyes.

“I can’t, Jojo. It’s not about me, or even Nico.”

“It’s Calli.” It’s not a question. It doesn’t need to be—she said so herself on the drive back here from the hospital.

My lips open but quickly close again.

“As long as everyone is okay, she can keep all the secrets she likes.”

“Everyone is good.”

“You should sleep,” she says, leaning over me and pressing a kiss to my head.

A lump crawls up my throat once more, stopping me from replying.

“You want me to stay?” she offers, shooting a look at the other side of my bed.

I shake my head. “I’m okay. I’m just tired.”

“As you should be after that orgasm.”

“Jodie,” I chastise.

“What? Did you really expect me not to acknowledge just how loud you screamed? I knew for sure you weren’t alone this time.”

“Thanks for not telling me he was here last night and that you walked in on me getting myself off.”

She holds her hands up in defence.
