“I thought you were awake and fully aware of the situation.”

“Well, I wasn’t,” I sulk, making her laugh.

“Oh, just get out and go and wake your man up with a blowie.”

She sucks in a surprised breath but quickly recovers. “You know, that’s not a bad idea. If you need me, just shout, yeah?”

“I’m okay. Go and enjoy him.”

I watch as she walks around the bed and frowns when she comes to an abrupt halt in front of the door.

“What’s wrong?”

As she bends down to pick something up, I sit up straighter, more than a little intrigued.

“It’s…” She stands with a white envelope in her hand. “For you.”

My brows pinch in confusion, but a little realisation dawns the second she holds it out for me. I know that handwriting.

“You should read it,” Jodie encourages.

I take it from her with a trembling hand.

A letter from Nico was the last thing I was expecting.

Unless it’s not, and a whole heap of sordid photographs are about to fall into my lap or something. That seems more likely.

I don’t realise that Jodie has gone until the click of the door closing hits my ears.

I slump down in the bed, my eyes locked on my name that’s scrawled in his handwriting across the front of his envelope.

My hand trembles and my heart pounds as I flip it over and rip it open.

I don’t find photographs, just a folded piece of lined paper.

Unfolding it, I hold it out in front of me, my eyes immediately tearing up again with just the first line.

Siren,

My siren.

I had a meeting with a shrink tonight and amongst other things, she asked me what I wanted. What I really wanted.

I could only think of two things that were worthy of telling her.

1. I want to prove my right to step into my father’s footsteps. Whether that is next week, next month, or in ten years, I want it.

2. You.

NICO

Boss: New car waiting for you in the garage. Drive safe.

Ilower my phone to my lap and blow out a breath. I’ve spent most of the night tossing and turning, pointlessly hoping that she’d read my letter and come to me.

I even left the front door unlocked so she wouldn’t need to question whether her print would allow her entry. It would, but she doesn’t know that.
