“Bri,” she sighs, her eyes softening with sympathy.

“No, don’t give me that look. I’m fine and fully present.”

Her brow quirks at my blatant lie.

“You need to talk to him.”

“I’m not doing this again.”

I take off across the shop, my eyes scanning the clothes on offer, but I don’t really see any of it.

My phone buzzing in my handbag distracts me, and despite my better judgement, I reach in and pull it out.

I’m expecting to see Nico’s name staring back at me. I did have a photo of him naked in my bed as his contact, but I removed that after vowing that we were done to stop any kind of temptation when he reached out for a booty call. But when I see Knight’s Ridge College as the caller, I immediately swipe the screen, expecting Melissa to be on the other end. I emailed her to let her know that I was planning on coming back Monday, and she said we’d catch up before then.

“Hello?” I say the second I have my phone pressed to my ear.

There’s a pause that’s just long enough to make my heart begin to race before the inevitable happens.

“I hope you know that your voice alone gets me hard.” His deep voice washes through me, hitting me right between the thighs. All the hairs on my arms and back of my neck stand up as my hands begin to tremble.

“Fuck’s sake,” I hiss in the hope only my anger is audible down the line. “Didn’t ignoring your calls and texts tell you anything? I don’t want to talk to you.”

He’s silent for a beat, and I can’t help picturing his face dropping like it did last night when I sent him away.

But all that changes when he growls, “Siren.”

Heat washes through my body and an unignorable ache starts up between my thighs.

Damn him. Damn him to the pits of hell.

Gritting my teeth, I force myself to remember all the reasons I keep sending him away and telling him we’re done.

“I mean it, Nico. Nothing has changed,” I snap, putting as much conviction into my tone as possible before I pull the phone from my ear and hang up.

My chest heaves, my breaths race past my lips as I stand there staring at my screen, waiting for him to try again. But my phone goes to sleep, proving me wrong.

“Are you okay?” Jodie asks, coming around the rack of clothes I’m standing by.

My eyes lift to hers and I straighten my spine.

“Yeah, everything is fine.”

“Nico again?” she guesses correctly.

“Yeah, he’s trying new tactics and using the school phone to confuse me.”

“Cheeky. But I like his style. Come on, I can’t find anything I like in here.”

“What about the dress?”

“Meh. I can do better.”

“Okay, but I want more drinks after the next one.”

She shoots me a look but doesn’t argue.

Thankfully, the next shop doesn’t excite her much either, so we’re lowering our arses to a bench in a cocktail bar before I know it, waiting on two manhattans to be delivered.
