“You won’t.”
“I could bump your arm.”
“You won’t.”
“You don’t know that. I don’t want to hurt you.”
“One.”
“Zander.”
He frowned at that. “What’s my name?”
“Daddy,” she whispered.
“That’s right. Two.”
Stomping her feet so he’d know she wasn’t happy, if he didn’t get that from the scowl on her face, she moved towards him.
“On my knee.”
She shook her head and instead kneeled between his legs. Before he could scold her, she pressed her face to his inner thigh.
And the tears came.
And came.
She sobbed, unable to stop them.
“Baby girl. Fuck. Shit. Come up here. Damn it, Little Thief, I’m going to take a belt to your ass if you don’t get up here and let me comfort you.”
She sobbed out a laugh. Only Zander would threaten someone with a belt to the butt unless they let him comfort them.
“Baby, you’re killing me.”
“I c-c-could have l-lost you.”
“You’re not ever going to lose me. I promise.”
She shook her head. “I’ve never had someone that I was terrified of losing.” Even her fear for Angie didn’t feel like this. She felt as though she was falling apart.
“Keira,” he said in a low, pained voice. “Fuck. Come up here, baby girl. Look, I’ll sit back and you can curl up on my good side, all right? But I need you close.”
She nodded and stood, standing close by as he moved in case he required any help. Once he’d shifted over, she sat and turned into him, curling herself up against him. He held her tight with his good arm.
“My poor girl. You’re exhausted, aren’t you?”
She was. But she wasn’t going to admit it. “I’m all right.”
“I didn’t ask that.”
“I’m not what’s important right now.”
“You’re always the most important thing in my life.” He kissed the top of her head. “You need sleep. I want you to close your eyes.”
“I’m not going to sleep. I’m looking after you.”
“You can’t look after me when you’re dead on your feet. Now, close your eyes. Or I’m going to lay you over my lap and spank you. Which will probably hurt me more than you, but it will be worth it if you start listening to your Daddy.”
