“Daddy, can you paint my nails?”

“Paint your nails?” Zander gave her a confused look.

“Uh-huh, I want to have pretty nails when we go out tonight.”

Zander was taking her out to dinner to celebrate their engagement. Of course, she’d had to talk him into it. He wasn’t at all pleased at the idea.

But she was getting cabin fever. She needed to get out of here. And she didn’t feel like doing something with the team.

She wanted it to be just her and Zander.

Although, to her surprise, everyone had been happy when they’d told them that they were engaged. Even Honey hadn’t seemed horrified.

Progress.

“All right,” he said, coming over and picking up the deep blue nail polish she held out. Sitting at the table, he started to meticulously paint her nails. He did a much better job than she could ever do.

“Ooh, pretty. Look at that, Squeaks. Do you want your nails painted too?”

“His nails aren’t real,” Zander pointed out.

“Don’t listen to him, Squeaks. You can have pretty nails if you want. You too, Joseph Herbert.” She glanced at the other mouse in the cage. “Do you think Joseph Herbert would like to come out of his cage to be with Squeaks?”

“I think he likes his cage.”

Yeah, she thought so too. After he’d finished her fingernails, he moved onto her toes. It was kind of crazy to think this gorgeous, sexy man was kneeling to do her nails.

Her. The girl who’d always been a nuisance, who no one had taken notice of unless she was making trouble.

“Right, all done. I’m going to finish getting ready, then we’ll get you into your dress.” He tapped her nose. “No panties for you, Little Thief.”

A shiver ran up her spine at his words.

There would be no arguments from her. Although she was glad the dress she’d chosen was longer. She wouldn’t want to sit and have everyone see her hoo-ha.

Zander stepped back out of the bathroom and her mouth dropped open. If he was gorgeous in jeans and a T-shirt, in a white dress shirt and dress pants he was . . .

Phenomenal.

“You look amazing,” she whispered.

He raised his eyebrows. “Like what you see?”

She grinned. “Hmm, maybe we should mess you up a bit, otherwise I’m going to be fighting off all the women who see you.”

“Doesn’t matter. Because the only woman I see is you.”

An hour later, they were being shown to their table. This place was far swankier than she’d expected. In fact, she’d never eaten in such a fancy place. It was a little intimidating. The booth they’d been given was quite private, though. The table was covered in a long cloth, and Zander sat right next to her.

“Put your leg up on mine,” Zander commanded after the waiter took their drink orders.

A shiver raced down her spine as she raised her leg up, putting it over his thigh. The tablecloth would hide what they were doing. But it still felt wicked.

“I have something for you.” He drew out the egg he’d given her that first time he’d gone out on a job. “Did you ever use this?”
