“Well, I’d like to know what you were doing visiting Angela Bartolli today,” he said, shocking Zander. He heard Keira gasp behind him. “Not that she goes by that name anymore.”

“Who are you to Angie? How do you know her?” Zander asked.

“Let’s just say, I’m helping her to get back on her feet.”

“And why would you do that?” Webb asked.

“You the one who bought her that cottage?” Honey asked.

“You surround yourself with smart people,” he said to Zander.

“Why would I want to surround myself with stupid people?” That would make no sense.

The guy smiled. “Quite right. Anyway, yes. I’m her benefactor, let’s say. Or maybe guardian is a better word. A protector? I’ve never been a protector before. Yes, I like that one.”

“I don’t understand. Why would you protect her? And from who?” Keira asked.

“Actually, I’d like to ask the questions.”

“And what makes you think we’d answer them?” Zander asked. This guy didn’t have the upper hand here.

“Let me see. Oh yes, it could be that there is a sniper with a rifle aimed right at you. Yes, that could be why you want to answer me.”

“And why would we believe you?” Honey asked.

“Because of this.”

He pressed a button on his watch and . . . nothing happened.

“Oh shit,” Honey muttered. “Boss, there’s a red dot on your forehead.”

Fuck.

“What?” Keira cried. “Webb, let me past.”

“Webb, hold her there,” Zander barked. “Keira, I’m fine.”

“Well, of course you are. I haven’t told my associate to fire. And I won’t, if you answer my questions. It’s rather annoying having to engage others’ help. I really prefer to work alone. But needs must.”

“What do you want?” Keira asked.

“Like I said. I want to know why you turned up on Angela’s doorstep today. Who are you people? And I suggest you answer truthfully, unless you don’t mind this guy losing the top part of his head.”

“I’m Keira, her stepsister.”

Fuck, he hated the note of terror in her voice. That she had to answer this asshole’s questions.

“Her stepsister. That’s interesting. When I asked Angela about her family, she said she didn’t have any. She said that her mother lived with a man for a while but that he and his daughter abandoned her after her mother died and she didn’t want anything to do with either of them.”

Ouch. That really hurt.

“I’m guessing you’re the daughter.”

“Yes.”

“So then why would you come here? And how did you find her?”

There was silence.
