“He kidnapped my girl. And he drew a gun on me.”

“Yeah, but Ed is going to complain about all the paperwork,” Kent replied.

She noticed there was another man with him. What was his name?

Dominic.

That was it.

“Keira, are you all right?” Kent asked her. “Dominic, can you grab her a blanket from my truck, then call Ed. Tell him what happened?”

“On it.”

“I want to search his stuff before Ed gets here.” Zander took the blanket and wrapped it around her. He grabbed her chin, tilting it up. “I want you to stay right here. You’re not to follow me in, all right?”

She let out a noise of protest, grabbing hold of him.

“I will be right back, Little Thief. Tell Kent what happened.”

She didn’t want him to leave, but she didn’t say anything as he walked back into that shack.

“Keira? Sweetheart, come sit in my truck.”

“You guys found me.”

“Zander tracked you by your necklace.” Kent opened the backdoor of his truck and lifted her in. Probably just as well, since her legs felt like wet noodles.

“How did Carl get to me? I went in for my facial, then there was a prick on my neck . . . then nothing.”

“It was the woman working at the beauty place,” Kent told her. “He threatened her five-year-old son. She was terrified, so she did what he said.”

“Oh no, that’s terrible.” She wished the woman had told someone, but she knew she must have been so scared.

“All right. I’m done,” Zander said, striding over to where she sat. There was a siren in the distance.

“D-did you find anything?” she asked.

“I’m not sure. Do you recognize this?” He held out his hand to her.

It didn’t register for a moment. Then it hit her like a ton of bricks. In his palm sat a pen drive.

The exact same pen drive that Max lost.

“That mother-fucking bastard.”

As soon asthey walked into the cabin Kent had given them to use while they were staying at the ranch, Zander picked her up.

“Zander, I’m all right,” she whispered as he carried her into the bedroom. He set her down, then crowded her against the wall. She dropped the hand that was holding the ice pack to her cheek. Grabbing her hand, he gently raised the ice pack to her cheek again.

Kent had given her one of the ice packs that activated when you snapped it. She hoped it kept the swelling down.

“Keep that there,” he growled.

“I’m fine, Zander.”

She’d repeat it until he believed her.
