“You tried to hide how much that stuffed mouse meant to you, but it was the only thing you cared about. You took it everywhere.”

Crap.

“Why now? Why not come for me earlier?”

“The tracker doesn’t have an endless range and I lost the signal. I needed to make some cash, and I figured the cartel was the way to do that. Plus, it would get me away from anyone sniffing around after me. But that was a bust after I ended up in jail. Not risking that shit again. So I thought I’d head back to Montana in case you came back here. And then, lucky me, you came right into my lap. Along with that blond asshole. Who’s a dead man for touching you.”

Really? He thought he could take on Zander?

Idiot.

He reached out and twisted a lock of hair around his finger.

She pushed his hand away. His gaze narrowed, and he lunged for her, wrapping his hands around her neck and shoving her onto her back. Her head slammed into the wooden floor. Ouch.

Move, Keira. Move!

She got one leg up and smashed it into his balls. He rolled off her, and she gasped for air. She searched around for something to use to knock him out.

Getting to her feet, she lunged towards the door.

Then she came to a sudden stop. She glanced back to find he’d grabbed hold of her robe. She shrugged out of it, kicking at him. The robe slipped off, and she jumped toward the door once more.

“Come back here, bitch! You’re not leaving me again! You’re mine!”

She reached the door, opening it and diving through it. Instead of hitting the ground, she bumped into a hard chest. A scream escaped her. She started to fight. Did he have someone with him? An accomplice?

“Easy, baby girl! Stop! It’s me. It’s just me.”

Zander.

She relaxed, just as Zander handed her over to someone else. “Hold her.”

Through her panic, she realized that Kent now held her.

“Zander, wait!” she cried.

A scream of pure fury came from the room she’d been locked in and she slammed her hands over her ears as a gun fired. Once. Twice.

“Zander!” she screamed in terror. She fought Kent’s hold, but he kept her back. It wasn’t until Zander walked back out the door that she finally started to breathe again. Ragged sobs left her as he strode toward her.

Kent set her down and she threw herself into Zander’s arms.

“You’re all right. You’re all right. You’re all right,” he muttered.

She wasn’t certain if he was talking to her or himself. But he held her, rocking her from side to side. And gradually, it allowed her heartbeat to slow, the panic to drain from her. Exhaustion flooded her.

“What happened? Where’s Carl?”

“It doesn’t matter,” he told her. Pulling back slightly, he stared at her cheek. “Did he hurt you?” He ran a finger over her cheek.

She winced, and he growled.

“He slapped me, but that’s all. Nothing more.”

“That mother-fucking bastard.”

“Shit, Zander, did you have to kill him?” Kent complained as he walked back out of what appeared to be an old, rundown shack. She glanced around. They appeared to be in the middle of nowhere. If Zander hadn’t come for her, if she hadn’t managed to escape, then Carl could have done anything to her and no one would have known.
