“Shoot. Is the car on fire?” Keira asked worriedly.

“If it is, she better get out.”

“Daddy!” She winced, remembering she was trying not to do that stuff in front of Angie.

“It’s okay,” Angie told her. “You don’t need to hold back on my account. I know I was a bit surprised by your relationship, but I did some research and talked to a few people on the ranch. I kind of get it now.”

“Yeah?” Keira asked with relief. Because she sucked at trying to pretend to be something she wasn’t.

“Yeah,” Angie told her with a small smile.

By now, Charlene had gotten out of the car. Keira breathed out a sigh of relief. It would take the cops a bit longer to get out of here, and she really didn’t want to have to try and rescue her from a car fire.

Although she was still close to her car.

“Is she kicking the tires? Who is she? I take it she’s not some random chick who decided to attack your gates?” Angie asked.

“She’s Zander’s ex. She’s having a hard time letting go,” Keira explained.

“I don’t get it,” Zander said. “She left me.”

“But she realized she made a mistake, Daddy.” Keira patted his arm. “She got out into the world and discovered that no man could measure up to you.”

Zander sent her a heated look, then leaned over to kiss her.

“Urgh, gag,” Angie muttered.

Keira jumped, then turned and gave her an embarrassed look. “Sorry.”

Angie waved a hand in the air. “No, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that. To be honest, I think I’m kind of jealous of how sweet you two are. What is she doing now?”

Charlene was pacing back and forth, hands in her hair, tugging as she talked to herself.

“She’s lost her mind,” Keira said.

“Looks that way.” Zander wound down his window. They caught snippets of what she was yelling.

“ . . . lost everything . . . owe me . . . nothing.”

“Her ex did catch her cheating,” Zander told them. “He had a PI follow her. And her pre-nup stated that if she cheated, she got nothing.”

“Why does she blame you?” Angie asked.

“She was hoping to get back with him,” Keira said. “Guess she thought he’d just take her back.”

Zander snorted. “I’m not stupid. I’ve got the world right here. Why would I want her?”

Aww. So sweet.

The wedding had gone off without a hitch. Well, after her kidnapping. She shuddered. She knew she was going to have nightmares about that for a long while to come. But she was also proud of the way she’d fought back. She’d felt strong. Capable. Something she hadn’t felt in, well, forever.

Sirens approached, and they watched as officers arrested a screaming Charlene.

Keira winced. It was painful to watch.

Finally, as she calmed, they got her into the squad car. As they drove past, Keira made sure to smile and wave.

That was only polite, after all.
