Pft, my omega was clutching at straws if he thought those two things could be anywhere near the same thing.

“The difference is that I don’t give a shit what the university thinks. Idocare whatyouthink. I don’t want to make you feel awkward. I get it, you’re smart and sexy and you must get guys coming on to you all the time so if you’re not interested, then I can back off. I’m not going to push you. But if youareinterested and you don’t want to get in trouble with your faculty then—”

“You’re my student.”

“And that’s a problem because…?”

He just blinked at me again. Waggoner was stumped for an answer. I couldn’t believe it.

I eased up off the couch and approached him warily. I kept some distance between us. I didn’t want to loom over him and intimidate him if he was scared of me or something. Although, I don’t think he was. He wouldn’t have dozed off on my arm if he was scared of me.

“Waggoner? I looked up the rules. You can date a student. You can’t be their tutor or mark their assignments, so you’d have to give them to someone else. Otherwise, you can do what you like. With whoever you like.”

“You looked that up?”

I shrugged, suddenly feeling a bit too exposed. Had I revealed more than I should with that little confession?

“Yeah, I wanted to know.”

“Huh.”

That was not the answer I’d been looking for. I had no idea whether he was about to throw himself into my arms or kick me out of his apartment.

“I guess another movie wouldn’t hurt. If you’ve got nothing else to do.”

“Nothing more fun than that. Hey, do you have the movie Dark Star?”

He stared at me without answering.

“Waggoner? Are you ok?”

“You know Dark Star?”

“Are you kidding, it’s hilarious.”

“It was also made in the seventies, waybefore your time.”

I gave him a sassy look.

“Yeah, streaming is a thing, Waggoner. The seventies were also beforeyourtime, so don’t start with me.”

A little smile cracked across his face. He looked rueful. “Fair. And, yes, I have Dark Star. Let me find it.”

“Cool. Do you want a hot tea?”

His eyes dipped down. I was starting to see a pattern with Waggoner’s behaviour. He was incredibly confident about teaching and Science Fiction movies but as soon as we moved into relationship territory, he became unsure. Asking if he wanted tea wasn’t even a come-on. It was tea.

He fiddled with the hem of his t-shirt. It was adorable. It also made me want to pick him up and hold him close.

“Yes, that would be… nice.”

“I’ll make it – you get the movie ready.”

I busied myself making tea and revelled in the feeling of making myself at home in Waggoner’s apartment. It felt special that he’d let me in here. He didn’t strike me as the kind of guy who would let random people into his personal space.

Ok, maybe I was hoping that I was special. That he let me in because we were soul mates.

Nothing weird about that.
