“Wow, are you really insulting my abilities?”

“Speaking of yourabilities. You said you were going to—”

He cuts me off. “It’s in the works. Give me a minute to figure out the details.” Simon raises a brow. “Although, I may have to work it into yourdateschedule.”

I grin at him. “Am I sensing jealously?”

“Kinda, but honestly, sounds like they’re the ones who should be jealous since I spend more time with you than they do.”

“Touché.”

He’s not wrong. Simon and I spend every day together, and aside from fucking and macking on each other, we do pretty much everything me and the rest of the guys do.

If they weren’t the ones who insist on keeping Simon around, I’d be concerned I was borderline cheating.

My gaze falls to our pinkies still interlocked. I release his and pull mine away, that line blurring too damn much for my liking. I would never do anything to jeopardize my relationship with the guys—but it’s difficult to deny the friendship building between myself and their enemy.

So help me God, if we do not finish up this meeting in the next five minutes, I am going to murder every fucking person in this room.

I check my watch and sigh.

It’s either I kill them, or June kills me for being late for our date.

Especially after seeing the hurt on her face yesterday. I hadn’t realized things had been affecting her that severely. But that’s what I get for not paying attention. I’ve been consumed with more pressing matters and not focused on my main priority—her.

“Hayes, are you with us?” Dominic snaps his fingers in front of my face.

I smack his hand away. “Fuck off.”

His jaw tenses, and for a split second there, I forget we’re in a room with people other than just us.

Fuck. I just disrespected my direct superior.

I rise to my feet, shuffling the stack of papers in front of me. “Two shipments were intercepted. Four casualties. I got it.”

“Where the fuck do you think you’re going?” Dominic calls out to me as I make my way to the door.

“I have to go. It’s important.”

“You’ll be dealt with later.” Dominic’s parting words don’t shake me. He can punish me all he wants; nothing would be more severe than losing her again.

I rush outside, hop into the driver's side of my Audi RS4, and push the button to start the engine. The thing purrs to life, the exhaust crackling and sputtering. I waste no more time, throwing the thing into reverse and backing out of the parking lot. I slam it into drive and heave myself directly into traffic, darting around the meaningless vehicles that get in my way. The light ahead of me turns red but I thrust my foot onto the gas and blast right through it.

Flashing blue and red lights catch my attention in the rear-view mirror but I don’t let up on the accelerator, instead, I push it down harder, the speedometer reading eighty-two in a thirty-five.

The police car struggles to keep up as I pop in and around traffic.

I poke the touch screen on the dash, dialing one of my saved numbers.

It rings once, then twice before a man answers. “Officer Bradshaw.”

"You've got a man on Ninth near Parsons. Call him off."

“You’re going—”
