“That’s up to her.”

“You do love her,” he teased. “I’m glad to hear that, although I am surprised at your uncompromising choice.”

Now I laughed openly. “So am I. Right now, I just need to keep her safe.”

“Have you found Devon?”

“Not yet. I sent several soldiers to Chicago, but he left town almost two weeks ago.”

“Was he in New Orleans?”

I walked toward him, shaking my head. “No. He took a flight to New York. Then to London on business. That’s where the trail ended.”

“It could be a decoy.”

“Trust me, brother. I’m no fool. I have my house secured. No one will be able to get to her.”

Alessandro shoved his hand into his pocket as he walked closer. “That’s what I said about Sierra. Never let your guard down. Especially since Rodriguez has made threats against us, open ones this time.”

“I suggest we cut him off at the pass.”

“How so?”

“Give the DEA and Feds what they’re looking for.” I grinned as I lifted my glass, enjoying a sip of the smooth liquor. “That way, they’ll get off our backs.”

He laughed, his eyes twinkling. “My God. You are more like our father than I ever believed possible.”

“This time, I’ll take it as a compliment.”

His jovial expression hardened. “Are you sure you know what you’re doing with this woman?”

“Her name is Eden.”

“No, her name is Carmella Rosario. This isn’t a game any longer, Cruz. Devon Rosario is a bastard of a man. He’ll do what it takes to get her back.”

“She doesn’t belong to him. In fact, I think he was responsible for killing her parents and his own wife.”

“Why? That doesn’t make any sense, unless it was all about money.”

“It was about power, his need for revenge against his brother driving him to madness.” The same kind of insanity that had nearly ripped me apart. The irony was something I couldn’t ignore.

“Why his wife?”

I shook my head. “I have a theory that she went to Eden’s house to warn her parents.”

“Farfetched.”

“Maybe.” He stared at me for almost a full minute, finally nodding as if accepting what I was saying. I had no way of knowing if I was right, but there was no doubt Devon would make a move. All I needed to do was give him enough rope to hang himself. “Wallace’s family is secure, although several of Devon’s soldiers were eliminated in the process.”

“Which means Devon will seek revenge for that alone.”

“That’s exactly what I’m hoping for.”

“You play hardball, brother. I only hope you know what you’re doing.”

“Yeah, so do I.”

He lifted his glass in a toast. “It seems we all have news to share. Sierra is pregnant with twins.”
