We’d shared little with each other over the years, but I couldn’t be happier for him. “Heirs to the throne.”

“You know what’s funny? I don’t want either one of them involved in the business. That means you’re heir apparent.” He snickered after making the statement, knowing my answer. Maybe I’d surprise him one last time.

“That will be just fine.”

He walked even closer. “If you really love this woman, then understand that your entire life and all you valued up to this point will mean shit. You’ll hunger for something else entirely. I won’t hold you to the promise. However, I agree with you that we should go legit, phasing out several of our illegal operations.”

“The world must be spinning the other way.”

“Yeah, it must be. Sierra insisted and you’ll learn quickly the women really call the shots.”

It was my turn to lift my glass in appreciation. “I’ll look forward to that.” If I was allowed the gift. I still wasn’t certain Eden wanted anything to do with me or my life, no matter how many changes were made. “Maybe I’ll become a philanthropist, working with a few charities.”

“Why not auction off some paintings for a good cause?”

I thought about his suggestion. “I like that. A very good idea.”

“Now, the earth will soon be destroyed by the sun.”

We both had another laugh and it felt good. Truth be told, I was serious. Why not do something outside of what I’d been taught. “Pops will have a fit.”

“Yeah, so what? We’re used to it.”

“What about Wallace?”

“Is he serious about paying us back?” he asked.

“I think so. I honestly believe he was so terrified of what Devon would do, he was trying to find a way to keep his family safe.”

“Maybe charity begins at home. I’ll have a talk with him after Devon is handled. And I know you. By this time next week, Devon will either be six feet under or behind bars. That’s your choice.”

I thought about his words and envisioned both scenarios. There was only one that was acceptable.

Let the last game begin.

“Are you sure this is what you want to do, boss?” Jameson asked from behind me.

I’d stood in the same spot for almost ten minutes, unable to take my eyes off Eden. The entire time, my cock remained hard as a rock. “I’m certain.”

“It’s risky.”

“Worth the risk. The asshole has yet to take the bait.”

“He’s still out of town, at least from what I can tell.”

“He’s watching. Waiting. I refuse to put her through any additional torment. Just have everything ready.”

He groaned from behind me. “Whatever you say, boss. I don’t like it though. You don’t know if it’s going to work.”

“Trust me, Jameson. It will work.”

I heard his grumbles as he walked out. What I was doing was risky as hell, but the entire point of playing the game of chess was to have patience. Sighing, I closed my eyes briefly, hating the fact the past continued to haunt me. This was the only way to have any kind of future.

Even if it was without having Eden in my life. My perfect Garden of Eden.

I found Eden standing far too close to the edge of the cliff. Any movement could cause her to fall to her death, crashing against the rocks covering the shoreline. As I approached, I sensed she knew I was heading in her direction. She turned her head, the early morning sun highlighting her profile. For several reasons I anticipated discord on her face, but there was a serene look, as if she was at peace.
