She’d been my guardian angel for so long, whispering words of encouragement when I’d needed it the most.

But my savior had been a man I’d once considered a dark, dangerous predator. He’d also been my destiny, or so a fifteen-year-old girl had thought when she’d looked into the deepest blue eyes she’d ever seen.

I’d heard that everyone had two sides, both good and bad. While I wasn’t certain of that any longer, what I did know was that evil did exist in this world.

As I pressed my fingers against the stunning diamond and emerald necklace Cruz had given me the night before, I allowed myself to remember the few fantasies from before. This was a special day, one I wasn’t certain I’d ever allow to happen.

I took a deep breath, allowing the light January breeze to tickle my skin as I held my arms. The ocean seemed more turbulent than usual, but gray sky not what I’d wanted. It would seem nothing about my life had actually gone the way I’d hoped or planned.

I still had days of melancholy, enough so often the only peace I managed was to stand on the precipice looking down at the rocks below. With one false move, a burst of wind, I could tumble over and finally be free of the ugliness.

As I threw out my arms, tipping my head toward the sky, I realized that I no longer feared death. It was just a part of life. However, everything had changed over the last few weeks. Now I wanted to live. I was fierce about it, refusing to allow anyone to take it from me. Not a single day.

Shuddering, I could almost feel the warmth of my mother’s smile. I’d intended on killing Devon, but I wasn’t an evil person. I hadn’t been able to do it. But I wounded him enough Cruz had retaken control. Then he’d allowed his soldiers to handle the rest before dropping him off at the police station. He’d wisely recorded our conversation. From what I’d learned, Devon would never see a day outside of prison again. At least he could wallow in guilt, if he even had the capability. I’d never known anyone so cold, completely devoid of remorse.

I could always feel Cruz’s presence behind me. It didn’t matter how quietly he entered a room, I knew the instant he was close. That’s how strong our connection was. Today it was even stronger, as if karma knew how special the day had become.

When he placed his hands on my shoulders, the eruption of tiny firecrackers in my bloodstream was enough to drive away the freezing temperatures.

“You need to come inside. You’ll catch a cold out here,” Cruz muttered in his dark, husky voice as he blew across the nape of my neck.

“That’s an old wives’ tale.”

“You’re doubting your master?”

Now I laughed. “Is that what you think you are? Maybe I’ll control you.”

He whipped me around, pulling me away from the edge but not before glancing down at the same rocks I’d stared at so many times. He’d told me how often he’d thought about jumping to his death, unable to handle the guilt and anger. He’d also told me that he was changing his life, even though I demanded that he not do it for me.

Demanding anything of him was silly. He would do exactly what he wanted to do at all times.

Including today.

“Are you wearing your plug?” He lowered his head, nipping my earlobe.

“Yes.”

“I don’t believe you.”

As he started to tug the material of my wedding dress up the back of my legs, I tried to squirm away. “Guests are going to arrive anytime. They’ll see us. And don’t you dare ruin my dress.”

“So they get a show before the wedding.” He refused to allow me to get away, caressing my bottom before driving his finger into the crack of my ass, shoving aside the G-string. When he twisted the plug back and forth, I quivered, a moan rushing from my lips. “A perfect jeweled accompaniment. I’ll buy you another dress.”

“That’s not the point.”

“I think someone needs a spanking.”

I pressed both hands against his chest, jerking my head backward. “You wouldn’t dare.”

His grin told me otherwise. “Come inside. I have a surprise for you.”

“Hmmm… That always makes me nervous.”

“I can see I’ll need to chain you to the bed tonight.” He wrapped his fingers around mine, backing away and heading for the house.

“I should make certain everything is ready in the greenhouse.”

“Not a chance. You’re coming with me.” When I toyed with him, trying to break free, he tossed me over his shoulder. All I could do was laugh. He took long strides into his office, easing me down and giving me a stern look. “Stay right here.”
