“I know what a pickup line is, Jazzy. I haven’t been out of the dating scene that long.”

“I think the dinosaurs were still around the last time you had a date.”

“If you were here, I’d drown you.”

She snorted in the cute little way that always grabbed a man’s attention every time we went out. “You know I’m right. Forget about the pig and move on.”

“I don’t even remember his name. Okay?”

“Sure you don’t. Prove it.”

“How?”

“Come out with me tomorrow night for Day of the Dead.”

I rolled my eyes. She’d asked me at least four times knowing I didn’t really have a good excuse, but I was determined to try. “You know I have the party at the gallery in a couple days.”

“You’ve been ready for that event for almost a week. Don’t try and lie to me.”

“Yeah, but there are always last-minute details.”

“That’s it. You are coming out with me. And wear something sexy. It is a party.”

I chewed on my lip as I walked to the window, staring up at the full moon, remembering his last words in Spanish, even if I was clueless as to what they meant. “You know Spanish.”

“Yes. Oh! Did he caress you with his voice in Spanish? Even sexier.”

“Hasta que nos volvamos a encontrar, diosa. Cuando lo hagamos, exigire su rendicion. I think that’s what he said anyway.”

There was silence on the other end of the phone. “Are you sure?”

“Pretty certain. Why? What does it translate to?”

“‘Until we meet again, goddess. When we do, I’ll require your surrender.’”

I almost spit out my sip of wine. “Really?”

“My Spanish is a little rusty, but I’m pretty certain that’s what he said.”

“See? I’m glad I left the party.”

“You’re incorrigible. Think about the painting.”

“I am.” That’s why it bothered me. Thank God the senator didn’t purchase one of the few that I couldn’t allow to be seen from the window. I thought about Talon, the artist who’d begged me to consider a show. Hell, the guy had bugged me nonstop for over a week. He was talented, but given what Zorro had said, all I could think about was his deviant behavior being a backdrop for his inspiration.

Especially the paintings that fell into the brutal category, as risqué as I could allow being seen by the public. I could only imagine what other works of art the man kept hidden in his residence.

“Tomorrow night.”

I knew I wouldn’t get her off my back unless I agreed.

“Okay, fine.” As I ended the call, I couldn’t get the vision of Zorro out of my mind. Tall, dark, and dangerous.

With any luck, I’d never see him again.

Is that what I really wanted?
