His laugh almost pissed me off and I wasn’t certain why.

“You surprise me more and more, Cruz. There’s one last situation you can handle while you’re there.”

“You located the snitch.” Alessandro had already been questioned by the Feds about another old case based on anonymous information. Someone was out to take down our family piece by piece. My instincts told me there was a bigger plan that had been initiated, but Alessandro refused to listen, picking off anyone who pissed him off one by one.

“I believe so.”

“Who is he?”

“He goes by many names.”

Sighing, I rubbed my eyes. I wasn’t here to go on a wild goose chase. “Which means you have no clue.”

“He has a snake tattoo on his forearm.”

That sounded familiar, although I hadn’t had the displeasure of meeting him. “I’ll see what I can do.”

“I have no doubt you’ll handle it for me. You’re becoming more like our father every day.”

I didn’t take that as a compliment but sadly, he was right.

Perhaps there would be blood spilled on the streets of New Orleans after all.

“Where are you, little goddess? Do you think you can hide from your master?” His deep voice resonated in the room, echoing in my ears. Every syllable was enunciated, his husky tone tingling every inch of my skin.

I took several deep breaths as he came closer, finally holding it in my lungs, biting my lower lip not only to keep from moaning, but also enjoying the hint of pain.

There would be more.

Although the hunter inside of him enjoyed the game, the end was always the same. He would locate his prey. Then there would be harsh consequences.

Everything about his presence created shivers, my nipples aching from the constant need.

“Come out, come out, my sweet girl, and you will be rewarded.” He laughed, the sound as dark and dangerous as the man I craved. The man whom I’d given my full surrender. There was no doubt what he’d do to me when the hunt was over.

He’d punish me.

Shackle me.

Taste me.

Fuck me for hours on end, his needs insatiable.

And I’d love every minute of my submitting.

He turned away, heading toward another room. I waited, counting to ten, and when he was out of sight, I shifted from behind the thick drapes, padding my way toward a different doorway. I crept against the wall, listening for any sound of him. There was nothing but the ticking of the grandfather clock as well as the rapid beating of my heart. After a few more seconds, I braved leaving the room, heading for the library, his favorite location inside the old mansion.

I knew every creak of the floorboards, every spot where I was most vulnerable. I threw my head over my shoulder after hearing a single pinging sound, uncertain of its origin. Then I realized he must have gone upstairs, the tingling sound from a statue on a table by the banister.

Perhaps I’d win the game this time, my reward the choice of which game to play next.

And there was always a next time.

I could feel victory in my veins. All I had to do was make it to his leather chair and I’d won. His rules. Not mine. A smile crossed my face as I eased down the hallway, tossing another quick glance over my shoulder before rushing into the room.
