Eden, my perfect Aphrodite.

“Do you trust him, boss?” Jameson asked.

“Not for a minute. You need to keep an ear to the street. Any word on the snitch?”

“Nothing yet. He’s probably holed up somewhere.”

“Perhaps.” I head to the vehicle, yanking out my sunglasses.

“What do you want me to do if I find him?”

“Use your creativity.” As I opened the door, I thought more about the conversation with Rodriguez. “Also find out what you know about Rodriguez losing product.”

“Do you think there’s a connection?”

“I have a gut feeling there’s something more extensive going on. Why would everyone converge in New Orleans at the same time?” I eased into the seat, slamming the door. Keeping watch on various activities was also necessary, additional eliminations possible.

Why did I have a feeling Eden had drawn more attention to herself than she believed?

My father had never shared much other than his anger for most of my life. He’d rarely provided words of wisdom since he believed I would never amount to anything worthwhile inside the family. He was an emotionless man who rarely allowed himself to expose what was on his mind.

Except for a single night after I’d turned sixteen.

He’d called me into his office during the middle of a storm. His shirt was covered in blood, specks splattered across his face. He’d cleaned his knife right in front of me, tossing his stained handkerchief into the fire after he was finished. Then he’d held the blade in front of the flames, twisting the steel back and forth, staring at it without blinking. But I’d seen something I hadn’t before or since.

A single tear.

Then he’d made a statement I knew he’d deny if asked.

“Never allow a woman to become anything more than a possession. For if you do, the betrayal will be painful, immediate, and it will steal your soul.”

That was the night I realized he’d fallen in love with someone other than our mother and he’d made the difficult decision to end the woman’s life.

I’d accepted a long time ago that love was neither a good idea nor acceptable in my world. However, that didn’t mean I wasn’t allowed to enjoy the perks of my position.

My balls tightened at the thought of her. She’d sparked something that I refused to deny.

Perhaps it was time to enjoy my unfilled needs by making good on the promise I’d made the night before. Only I couldn’t allow her to walk away, returning to her life.

I’d kept the promise I’d made to myself, easing the heartache and damning nightmares that had plagued me for years. I’d exact my revenge on her luscious body, ignoring her pleas of leniency, savoring watching as she surrendered to my every need.

Only then would I allow the treachery to return to my mind.

I took a deep breath, the vile and ugly thoughts giving way to something else entirely. A hunger like I’d never experienced, a need burning so deeply inside that I felt more alive than I had in years.

She’d soon learn her fate and what it meant to become my possession.

My plans would need to be escalated now that I’d finalized them. She would be married, but only after her birthday.

And not to one of the cronies Devon controlled but to his greatest enemy.

To the man she knew as Zorro.
