Laughing, I sat back in my seat. “Of course not. She was raised by a man who taught her every method of self-protection.”

“Does that mean you know her?”

Jameson knew several of my dark secrets, but not this one. “Let’s just say I know her uncle well enough to anticipate everything he required her to learn.” I’d barely met her father years before, but I’d known of his brutal reputation. I’d admired his ability to clean up the streets of Chicago, making a name for himself when he’d been in his twenties. Eden reminded me of him. Her chutzpa continued to impress me, more so than I’d imagined she would. She certainly wasn’t what I’d expected.

He glanced at me then drove the SUV around the corner.

“Is this about Annie?” he asked, throwing another cautious look into the rearview mirror. He knew better than to ask, but he’d be required to keep her safe, so information was needed. He’d picked up some of the pieces early on, keeping me from driving off the edge of a cliff. I’d told him little about the situation at the time. I hadn’t talked to anyone about the heartache. It had been far too personal. However, he knew me well enough to sense this was entirely personal.

“It has everything to do with Annie.”

I sensed he was uncomfortable as hell.

“Boss. Be careful. I know you don’t need any advice.”

“Then don’t give me any!” The fact I’d snapped at him was a clear indication Eden had gotten under my skin.

He muttered under his breath but remained quiet.

“Is that her?” he asked, pointing out the window.

“Yes.” I glanced out the window, not surprised my cock was already at full attention once again. She had that kind of effect on me.Ah, sweet Eden. You have no idea what’s in store for you.

“What do you want with her?” Jameson asked only after we’d trailed behind her for a full mile. Her caution continued, enough so she even darted inside a drug store for a few minutes. Perhaps she’d already determined it wasn’t in her best interest to continue our play time.

If so, she would soon learn the hard way she had no other choice.

I’d already crossed a line that couldn’t be remade under any circumstances.

I thought about his question for longer than I usually did.

“Let’s just say I’ll have a guest with me when returning to New York. For now, you’re going to keep an eye on her when I’m not with her.”

“Why the need, boss? If you don’t mind me asking.”

The one thing I knew about the powerplay both Devon and I were involved in? There was always another opponent prepared to use any weakness as an opportunity. If Rodriguez got wind of the fact I considered Eden anything more than a casual fling, he’d use her against me.

That was the way of my world, the brutality of the situation.

“Sanchez.”

“Gotcha, boss. I’ll make certain I keep an eye on her.”

“Do that.” I glanced one last time at the building where she lived, staring up at the third-floor window until I noticed a light had been turned on. Only then was I ready to leave.

But there would be more. When I was finished, her world would never be the same.

Now it was time to handle additional business. After all, the clock was ticking.

I only hoped it wouldn’t lead to a final detonation.

The sound of his cell phone chiming drew my attention.

“Yeah?” he answered. Then he chuckled. “If your information checks out, you’ll be rewarded.” He ended the call, tossing the phone into the seat beside him. “The dude with the tattoo was found. How do you want to handle it?”

“You’re certain you trust him?”

“From what I can tell. He doesn’t have a reason to lie to me,” Jameson insisted.
