“Ah, but that’s where you’re wrong. You know the deepest, darkest part of me. And trust me, sweet girl, we’re only getting started.”

“Then tell me the truth about what happened. Did you kill my parents?” I closed my eyes, trying to hold back anger that she didn’t deserve to experience. When she asked the question again, there was no way for me to avoid it.

“No.”

“Then who did?”

She deserved the truth. All of it. Even if I couldn’t prove it.

As I brought her closer and closer toward an orgasm, I realized how much I loved her. She’d awakened my soul, allowing the light to surface once again. She’d become my salvation without trying.

And no one was ever going to hurt her again.

No matter what I had to do.

CHAPTER18

Eden

Pop! Pop! Pop!

As soon as he’d yanked open the passenger door, shots rang out, at least one of them pinging off the hood of the car.

“Goddamn it. Get inside,” Cruz bellowed as he shoved me in, slamming the door and jumping over the hood. By the time he crawled onto the driver’s seat, his weapon was in his hand.

“What’s happening?”

“They found us. Hang on.” He started then gunned the engine just as a car came down the alleyway toward us. “Shit.” He slammed it into reverse, throwing his head over his shoulder then pressing his foot down on the accelerator.

I gripped the dashboard, staring at the car in front of us as it gained speed.

Cruz slammed into several boxes, the car barely shifting from side to side. I let out a yelp, sliding down in the seat, my heart racing.

“Who found us?”

He refused to answer, cursing under his breath and pushing the car harder.

Another series of shots rang out. The hard cracking of the windshield echoed in my ears. I dropped my head as he pressed his hand against me, pushing me down. I could hear his rapid breathing just before he issued a savage roar. He rolled onto the street, slamming on the brakes.

The car skidded, horns blasting everywhere. Then he threw the gear into drive, taking off like a bat out of hell. “Where the hell is my Capo?”

He wasn’t asking me the question, only the gods above. I could barely breathe, terror ripping through me.

The truth.

He’d promised me that as he led me from the gallery I’d likely never see again to his sleek black sedan waiting in the alley. I hadn’t fought him because I’d sensed the danger for days. Now I didn’t know what to believe. He’d told me that Talon was likely a drug mule who’d stolen from a dangerous man out of Colombia but that he’d been found. And I believed him. But there was more to what was going on.

What I did know was that truth cut like a sword, so painful that there was no ability to breathe. It was bloody and gruesome, but always found a way to heal.

This time I wasn’t certain I’d have the strength left to do anything but allow death to take away the sorrow.

I’d thought about finding the tallest cliff and jumping off, finally free from the horrors that had been my life.

Then I’d found myself, finally able to enjoy the peace of being alone.

Now, my Zorro, the man I’d fallen desperately in love with was threatening to take it away.

Passion was an interesting creature, a living breathing beast that had a mind of its own. That had to be the case because I was tingling all over from basking in the sweet release of ecstasy instead of hating the man who’d stripped me of what little was left of my innocence. Love was something else entirely.
