It was a crushing blow, like the claws of a monster digging into the hard beating muscle. I was strangled by it, my mind unable to process the intensity of my emotions but they were there, cutting through me like a knife.

Or a sword.

Like the one he’d carried the first time I’d met him. No, the second.

And I realized I’d loved him then after only a single look into his eyes.

How strange.

How… twisted.

There’d been no choice but to come with him. As the chase continued, the air in the car was even more electrified than before.

“You’re going to need to trust me, Carmella. You’re in danger. In truth, we both are.” Cruz’s words were just as dominating as the man. He darted a look at me, the heat from his eyes piercing straight through me. My mind was still foggy, unable to process that Talon was dead, even though I’d known it.

“Please call me Eden. Carmella is dead.”

He exhaled, nodding only once.

“From whom?” I asked, my tone pleading with him to tell me the truth.

“Your uncle.”

I burst into laughter, but the sound was as bitter and angry as I felt. “I already knew that.”

“Yeah, well, he’s dead set on hunting us down.”

“Why is he doing this?”

“You already know that answer.”

Gasping, I threw a look at the side mirror. There were two cars, both weaving in and out of traffic. “Something between you.”

“Yes. Devon isn’t a very nice man.”

“Why do you think I ran away in the middle of the night?”

“Why did you?” He shifted the gear, rolling around vehicle after vehicle. The assholes kept coming.

“You want answers, but you won’t give me any,” I told him.

“I’ll be glad to. If we get out of here alive.”

“Why does he want you dead? Why?”

“Because we have a nasty past.” He crossed over two cars before swerving around a corner, still gunning the engine. When he blasted the horn, trying to get the people in front of us to move, I had a feeling we weren’t going to make it.

He continuously glanced into the rearview mirror.

“Shit,” he snarled. “There’s an accident up ahead.”

I noticed the flashing red lights and cringed. “What are we going to do?”

After taking several deep breaths, he made several turns, constantly blocked in by traffic. The damn assholes were gaining on us. When he jerked the car to a stop, I was shocked. “We’re going to do this on foot.”

“You’re crazy.”

“We have no other choice.” He wasted no time pulling up to the curb, cutting the engine, not bothering to care if he blocked anyone in.
