“Oh, no you don’t. Don’t you fucking dare play martyr,” Kas warned, picking up on my train of thought before the others did.

“I can’t just hang out with you guys and wait for another attack - what happens if you don’t have a cave to retreat into when you go all woozy?” I said, pointing at him. “I don’t know why the gobbelins affect us differently, but I don’t want to take any fucking chances, Kingston.”

Using his last name startled him, and I remembered the conversation we’d almost had before the attack.

I couldn’t take it if he died in this Trial.

“Nobody else is dying just because they’re with me,” I snapped, turning away to grab my ruined tunic. I felt everyone worrying about me, and it just pissed me off more. Each new person I let into my heart or my friend circle was just another way for Merden to get to me.

“Don’t make the decision yet, kitten,” Luca said quietly, coming up behind me. “Blaise and I can protect Kingston. You can, too. But if we separate again... fuck, kitten. I don’t want to keep wondering if you’re still okay, or if you’re all alone, needing us.”

I pushed out a sigh. I didn’t like that feeling, either.

“Just... maybe just stay until the mist takes you back to your team. Don’t go off on your own, kitten. Please?”

I looked up at his handsome, earnest face. His eyes had lost their false blackness, and I guessed he didn’t have any of the potion with him that normally disguised him as a vampire.

“Okay, wolf,” I murmured, cupping his jaw in my palm and looking deep into those beautiful golden eyes. “I’ll wait for the mist.”

He smiled, and my heart crumbled a little. Because I’d just lied straight to his face, and he’d believed me.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

KANA

I was able to keep my secret from everyone but Blaise, and it both warmed and hurt my heart to know my men trusted me that much.

I didn’t want to betray that trust, but I’d do nearly anything to keep them safe.

Even so, the four of us worked great as a team for the next couple of days, mapping out a large new section of their section of the labyrinth.

But every time we came across a threatening animal and had to fight, I caught Blaise studying my reactions. I was jumpy as fuck, imagining gobbelins around every corner and waiting for the mist that never came.

“I would do it if I were you, too,” she whispered finally, as we hunted small game for dinner and Luca and Kas scouted for a good cave to shelter in.

“Do what?” I asked, playing ignorant.
