“It totally is,” he said. “I was going to ask you to go out to eat if you said no. I don’t want you to think you have to cook for me. That is why I said we could do it together. You know, like teamwork of sorts.”

“I’d like that a lot.” She’d never had a man want to be a team with her. Not a couple. Rick really was a good catch.

“You tell me the night that works for you and I’ll make it work for me.”

“Since you’re out of food for dinner tomorrow, why don’t we do it then?”

He laughed. “Phew. I didn’t want to eat a sandwich for two meals. Turkey and mustard though.”

“You’re just picking on me,” she said.

“I am. I had the rest of the chicken for lunch today with a piece of fruit. My mother would be so proud.”

“I’m sure your mother is proud of you for a lot of reasons.”

“She says she is,” he said. “I’m a good son. A better one now that I’m closer to home.”

“Do you see them often now?” she asked.

“Not really. They are still an hour away, but it’s better than across the country and at least we are in the same time zone. Do you see your parents often?”

“A few times a month,” she said. “We are all busy, but I talk to my mother at least once a week.”

“More than me,” he said. “I’m trying to change that though. Trying to be more present than I was.”

Again, a great trait to have and hear. “I want you to just be you with me,” she said. “Don’t try to be someone else.”

“I’m not,” he said. “I get the feeling you’d see through it anyway. When do you get out of work so I know when to expect you?”

“I’ll be there by five thirty,” she said. That would give her time to go home and change.

“Then I’ll see you tomorrow. You know the food in my house. We can figure out a meal from that. Don’t bring anything.”

He was firm when he said it, but she’d decide tomorrow. She didn’t want him to think he had to do it all. She wasn’t that way.

“See you tomorrow,” she said in a singsong voice that caused him to laugh before he said bye.

She liked that he read between the lines and didn’t give her crap over it either.

Something More

“Whose car was here the other night?” Robin asked. Harper was on the floor with George sniffing her out in her Halloween costume.

“What?” he asked.

His sister stopped over to check on George and see how things were going and let him see his niece dressed as a doctor in scrubs. Or maybe she was a nurse. He was thinking doctor and wanted the best.

“Last week. I was going to stop on Tuesday and there was a car here.”

He hadn’t said anything to Robin about Gillian. He wasn’t used to sharing things like that with his family but had to remember now his sister passed his house on the way to hers. That was how he knew about this house in the first place.

“I was on a date. Or the date was here.”

“Really?” Robin asked. “Harper, be nice.”

He looked over and saw Harper pulling on George’s ear. “Should I put him in the crate? I don’t think he’d bite her, but he’s just a baby too. Harper is used to your dogs.”
