“You might have a good point,” Robin said, picking Harper up and putting her on the island to sit where they were talking. “There. No reason to lock up the dog. She’ll be fine here. Back to your date?”

“Her name is Gillian Bridges.”

“Where did you meet her?” Robin asked.

This was where things got tricky. He supposed he could be honest but not give all the details. “You know Mom was on my case to go to the doctor. She works where I went.”

“Ahh,” Robin said. “Hitting on a nurse.”

“She’s a dietitian,” he said. No reason to lie.

Robin frowned. “Everything okay? You look great.”

“I’m fine,” he said. Which wasn’t a lie. “Anyway, I saw her two Saturdays ago at the park here in the development when I was walking George. She was there with her nephew, Ben. We started talking and I asked her to dinner that day.”

“So on Tuesday it wasn’t a first date?”

“No,” he said, dragging it out. “It was the second. And before you ask if I’ve seen her again, the answer is yes. I did over the weekend.”

Gillian had come over on Saturday, and they cooked again. He was starting to feel bad about that, but she seemed to enjoy it. They watched a movie and hung out. Did a lot more kissing and his body was getting worked up for something more, but he was telling himself to cool down.

“That’s great. I’m happy for you. You said she was at the park. Does she live in Paradise Place?”

“No,” he said. “Her brother and sister-in-law do.”

“What’s their name?” Robin asked. “Maybe I know them.”

“I’m assuming the last name is Bridges like her. She said Trey and Whitney.”

“Whitney Butler Bridges?” Robin asked.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I guess. Do you know her?”

Robin laughed. “Yeah. Her family owns or started Paradise Place. She just got married a few weeks ago. It’s on the website. Pictures of the wedding.”

He grabbed his laptop and typed the website for the development and saw the wedding picture, then the wedding party underneath. “Yep,” he said. “Imagine that. That’s her right there.”

It wouldn’t have mattered to him and he didn’t care all that much either. It just reminded him that this was a small area and he wasn’t used to it.

“She’s very pretty,” Robin said.

“She is,” he said, looking closer. She looked different all dressed up. “I’ve only seen her in normal clothes. Nothing fancy like this.”

“I’d love to meet her if it gets to that point,” Robin said. “Mom will too.”

“I’ll let you know,” he said.

“Are you telling Mom?”

He sighed. “I guess I’ll have to.”

She lightly punched his arm. “Sorry. You have to get used to this with us being close. I’ll try not to pry too much. How is work going at least?”

“It’s great,” he said. “I’m starting to dig in more. I’ve been on a lot of calls with my team. There are levels and layers of people, but since I manage a team, I’ve spent some time talking with the CEO. He’s not much older than me. Appears to be a great guy.”

“Do they want you to go meet at some point?”

“I get the feeling he’d like to. At least soon. Not sure if it’d be in Lake Placid, which I could drive to, or Richmond, which I would fly to. Either way, it’s nice being so close to the airport too.”
