“Get out!” Drago roars with the full weight of every alpha who sacrificed themselves to give him their magic. “Get the fuck out of here. You’re too late. She needed you, and where were you? Off sulking that you don’t get to be the only dick in her menagerie instead of thankful to be counted among them? She doesn’t need that, and we don’t need that kind of alpha in our unit.”

Rafe’s eyes glow with murderous fury, and Rook leaps off the ground to stand between me and Drago, and Rafe. “Back off, man. I don’t want to knock you out for a day again.”

My chest is caving in.

This can’t be happening.

My throat is so thick I can’t speak.

Rafe takes a few steps forward, a growl rattling through his whole body. “She was mine before any of you.”

Jonah rises from his post-O coma to stand not between me and Rafe, but to the side. Equidistant from Rafe and me.

“You need to calm your fucking tits, man,” he says to Rafe before turning to us. “We can’t just kick him out without hearing what he’s come to say.”

Rafe comes closer, his arms shifting into inhuman half-wolf, half-man anatomy. Muscles and veins bulge through a layer of downy fur as he steps toward us.

“Back off, alpha!” Rook orders, his hands up offensively.

Drago lets rip a deafening roar at Rafe, and I can’t.

I can’t anymore.

I can’t stand seeing my pack like this: my alpha so consumed with jealousy, my mage ready to blast him into next week, while my monster protects me from the fallout, and my sigma tries to negotiate…

It’s too much.

But I’m literally stuck on Drago’s knot until it decides to release me.

Jonah puts himself between Rafe and the rest of us. “We need to talk this out!”

And that’s the line.

Jonah putting himself in the line of fire. Risking himself between a hot-headed mage and an insecure alpha flips that switch in my brain from squishy omega to protect-your-mates faux-alpha.

My shoulders roll back, and everything in my body goes loose. “Release me, Drago.” The command rolls off my tongue like velvet, and every eye in the room slides to me. The weight of their gaze skates across my skin, the attention bolstering my confidence, my power.

Drago’s arms fall to his sides as his knot deflates and slips out of me. I slide down the front of his body, but my feet don’t touch the hardwood. My toes glide across the surface as I hover just above the floor.

“Donkeys, she’s amazing,” I hear from my left, likely from Rook, but all my attention is on Rafe.

Jonah and Rook give me a wide berth as I float to Rafe.

My heart.

My mate.

“Stop this, right now, Rafe. I know you, and this isn’t who you are.”

Rafe’s face is fully shifted into the same half-man, half-wolf configuration. I see nothing of him there. Not in the fur, not even in the green of his eyes.

Where there once were forests, now there’s only envy.

All I see is the jealous monster.

“Ground yourself, mate. You know this isn’t who you are.” It’s not a command. I won’t force him to be the man I love.

I’m just giving him the opportunity to do so.
