“Can’t sleep?” he asks.

“Actually, I slept just fine. The problem is that I didn’t mean to fall asleep. I was in the room with Volkov and must have passed out. I came to get some water and see what time it is. What are you doing down here alone at…two in the morning?” I ask, glancing at the stove clock for the time.

He just keeps typing away on his keyboard. “I’m doing a more thorough investigation on Nat’s background now that we know she is involved with the Bratva. I wanna know what I missed and how.”

I clap him on the back, grunting in agreement before going back upstairs. I stop short of the kitchen door to ask, “Oh, Conrad, what did Dr. Lewis say about BJ?”

“Ironically, BJ is totally fine, just as she said. He gave her some butterfly stitches for the cut on her forehead. She has some bruised ribs, but that is it. No lasting damage or even a concussion. The woman is a walking, talking, sassy miracle.”

“Damn, that’s good to hear, man. I was worried about her, even if she seemed alright when she was reaming us another asshole this afternoon,” I say as I round the corner. At the top of the stairs, instead of going to the medical room, I go to my own room.

I slip into the room, strip down to my boxers, and slide under the covers. I dream of a red-haired woman, sassing me as I force her to her knees to make better use of her mouth.

Alexie

Whyaremyeyesso heavy? Why the fuck do I feel like I got hit by a Mack truck? MALYSHKA? Where is Natalia? She was with me, and she was fucking pissed. Cursing me up and down as she kissed me. Then she screamed, and I felt the pain, knowing I was shot. She pressed on my shoulder while she cried and cursed someone that was out of my eyesight. Must be the cunt who shot me. I felt myself growing tired, weaker by the second, but I fought to keep my eyes open. Then the darkness consumed me.

My eyes flutter open and closed a few times, taking in the room while I take stock of how I feel. I try to sit up, but my left shoulder causes me to wince in pain. I fight through it, sitting up and slowly perusing the room. There’s a large, long-haired man sitting in the corner, staring at me. He looks like one of those pussies on that TV show Natalia likes to watch. I croak out, “Water?” He stands and hands me a bottle, taking the lid off for me. I take a sip and lower the bottle from my lips. “Who the fuck are you, and where am I?”

He smirks at me.Asshole, I’ll cut his lips from his body before I leave this place.“You are in no position to ask questions. You’re lucky you’re even here and not rotting in a jail cell somewhere for what you did,” the long-haired asshole retorts.

“And just what do you think I did?” I ask.

“We both knowyou’rethe one who blew up that building. You killed innocent people, and for what? Because we were closing in on your family’s empire of crime?” he interrogates, sitting back down in the chair that’s across the room. He must not see me as a threat.Fucking moron, I could have killed him four times, four different ways.

“You’re wrong, pridurok. I had nothing to do with that. I was, however, trying to follow the person whodidblow that building up. That was before I was caught by myZaychik. I should have known she would find me.” I chuckle. It was stupid to think I could be in the same city as her and shewouldn’tfind me. I was hoping I could get away from the scene fast enough, but I should have known that would never happen. “Where is she, by the way? I want to see Natalia,” I demand.

The asshole just glares at me. “Well, we need you to answer some questions. Once we have our answers, perhaps we can arrange for you to see your ’Zaychik’,” he says, doing finger quotes when he uses my girl’s pet name.

I growl at him. “I’m not answering anything until I see Natalia. Produce Natalia for me,and thenI will answer some of your questions. However, my girl probably has the same questions as you, so let’s kill two birds with one bullet and get it all done at once.”

“Fine. I’ll have her brought to your room, but two more members of this team will be present as well,” he states, getting up and walking out of the door.

I’m glad he saw reason. I will answer nothing without first making sure Natalia is fine. She is the most precious thing in my life now that I’m done with my father and his empire. I have never, and will never, agree with trafficking anyone, let alone children. If it’s the last thing I do, I will take him down and end his reign of torture. First things first, I have to tellMalyshkathat Katia is alive, and we have to get her out of the Gentlemen’s lounge where she’s being held.

It’s a short while later, my door is abruptly pushed open, and in walks that giant asshole from before. A man with glasses and ebony skin follows him, eyes downcast to the floor. He’s followed byMalyshka, and the group rounds out with a dark-haired man in a button-down shirt and slacks.WHY THE FUCK DOES NATALIA LOOK LIKE THAT?

I roar, jolting off of the bed and reaching out to Natalia. She shoves past the other men and grabs hold of me, crying. “Alexie, I was so worried about you, and they wouldn’t tell me anything, except that you were alive. Come sit back down, you’re hurt, and I’m fine. I just look gross, I swear,” she tries to laugh it off.

I sit down, listening to my woman, but I’m not letting this go. Natalia looks rough, and that’s putting it nicely. Her hair is filthy and matted in some places. She also doesn’t smell like vanilla and sin like she usually does. She smells musty, and there are dark circles under her eyes. “What have youpizdas, done to my girl?” Nat tries to shush me, but I’m not having it. I want answers, and I want them right the fuck now.

“First, let me introduce you to everyone in the room. So you knowexactlywho you’re talking to. I’m Agent Jackson Stryker, the team’s leader, this is Agent Conrad Stone,” he says, gesturing to the man with the ebony skin. “Lastly, Agent Samuel King who has been in the room with you previously.”

“I don’t give a fuck who you are or what kind of fancy agent title you have. I want to know why Natalia looks like she’s risen from the dead?” I shout at him.

“Alexie, I’m fine. I got what I deserved after I betrayed them for Andrei. They think we blew that building up. I know it wasn’t you, Alexie; I know it was Umbra,” Natalia says softly as she caresses my face.

The Stryker man speaks again, “We’ve had Natalie, or Natalia as you’ve been calling her, locked in a cell in the basement. You were brought here after King shot you. We had our Dr. look you over and fix you up, and minus some exercises he wants you to do for physical therapy, you’ll make a full recovery.”

Rage courses through my veins. How fucking dare they lock her in a cell alone in the basement? These bastards, I’m going to kill them all and bathe in their blood.

“And just how long have I been here while Natalia has been locked in a cell?” I ask.

“Three days,” Conrad speaks quietly.

“THREE DAYS? You’ve hadMalyshkalocked up alone in a dark basement for three days? What the fuck is wrong with you people? She would never blow up a building with people in it!” I yell out at them.

“We don’t know if we can trust her. We wanted you awake to answer some questions and to keep you apart for the time being. We’re out of our depth here because there is more at play than just the law’s side of things,” Stryker explains.
