He hooked his arm around her waist and turned them so she was on the bottom because the slow beat they were on now was making him crazy. His drive to possess her could no longer be ignored. He had wanted her to be in control, but he was literally going to die if he didn’t rocket them over the edge.

Right.

Now.

“Dakota…” Her gaze locked on his, her blue eyes bottomless, passion-filled, nearing the bliss that waited for them both.

He slid his arms beneath her, remaining up on his elbows so he could maintain their eye contact. Her face was a masterpiece as she gave herself over to the friction, the buildup, the surge of sexual energy that had to go somewhere or they’d both explode.

Her fingernails raked over his shoulders and the sensation set off a chain reaction inside him. With a final thrust, they both dove over the cliff, and he was flying. Flying like he never had before. Flying as if he didn’t have a parachute, but it didn’t matter because his landing would be in the arms of this phenomenal woman beneath him right now. Flying as if his wings could take him to outer space, farther than any astronaut… ah, hell… any alien had ever been.

Leah said his name over and over, her voice nothing but a hoarse whisper, as her body pulsed around him. She arched up once more then sank deep into the mattress, his body blanketing hers. When she wrapped her arms around his back and gave him a long, tight squeeze, her heart jackhammered against his chest. The steady thud of it resonated inside him and something told him this entire escapade had been different for her too. The two of them finding each other was destined.

Heart matches. That was what his mother would call them. She had a tale from her Abenaki ancestors that explained love as two hearts beating to a unique rhythm. Mother Earth herself blessed these pairings and when the hearts found their matches, nothing—nothing—could come between them. He’d always laughed at the legend, making some joke about the corniness of the notion.

Now? It wasn’t so funny.

“And I thought finally seeing that tattoo would be the highlight of this encounter.” Leah raked her fingernails through his hair and his eyelids had trouble staying open.

“Something top that, Miss Greenstead?” What if he asked her to stay the night? Would she?

“Hell, yes, something topped that.”

He lifted his head from where it rested on her shoulder. Her eyes looked as heavy as his felt. Her lips begged him to kiss them.

She met him halfway the moment she realized his intent, and they got caught up in a tongue-tangling match that left him breathless. He shifted off her slightly so his hand could coast over her breasts, her ribs, her hips.

“Keep doing that and you’ll never get me to leave.” She caught his hand with hers and interlaced her fingers with his, bringing both of their hands up to her lips. Soft kisses rained over his knuckles, and there was no way he was letting her go tonight.

“What if I don’t want you to?” He propped himself up on one elbow.

A little crease formed between her blonde brows. “Want me to what?”

“Leave.” He nuzzled her cheek with his nose then traced the rim of her ear with his tongue.

She pushed lightly on his shoulder as if she needed him to stop what he was doing because she might agree to absolutely anything when he was stimulating her like that. “Are you inviting me to stay the night?”

Suddenly his heart pounded against his ribs. Was he asking too much? He’d said they could play by her rules, but he hadn’t known how addictive she’d be, how he’d crave her after one taste.

“Yeah.” He pushed to sitting as she did. “Listen, if I’m moving too fast… if I’m pushing you… just—”

Her fingers came to rest on his lips, cutting off what he was saying. A slow grin turned up her lips and hope swelled inside him. “I’d love to stay, Dakota.” She rubbed her hands down her bare thighs as if she couldn’t believe she’d uttered those words. Her breathing sounded more like panting as if she might be having a panic attack.

“Shit.” Dakota kneeled in front of her. “Breathe, baby. In, out. In, out.” He took her hand and pressed it to his chest so she could breathe along with him. “Do you want a drink?”

She shook her head, her fists twisting the quilt beneath her. “Just… g-give… me… a… a minute.”

He turned to sit beside her and nudged her to lean against him, his back pressing into the head board of the sleigh bed. “I’ve got you, Leah. You’re safe here.”

That extinguished the attack pretty quickly and a moment later she nodded, her breathing sounding more natural. “I’m sorry. I know I’m safe with you. Sometimes I get overwhelmed. My mind conjures up all the things that could go wrong.”

“Nothing will go wrong with you staying the night with me. I promise to be a wonderful host.” He brushed her hair aside and kissed her delectable neck.

She rewarded him with a chuckle that shook against his chest. “You’ve already proven you’re capable of that.”

“And I haven’t even broken out my collection ofIndiana JonesDVDs yet.”

A full laugh bubbled out of her now and the sound washed over him, reminding him of his plan to make her smile. The key to earning Leah Greenstead’s heart was in making her comfortable enough so she could let go of the fears, the safety concerns, and just have a good time with him.
