He squeezed Mateo tightly, wishing that Connor could somehow come around to the modern way of thinking as he had. But Connor was obsessed with pleasing his father, so there would be no way around that.

Owen quickly returned to the cabin and made sure the door was closed and locked tight. When he returned to the kitchen table, the match had gone out, so he whipped another out from his pocket. When he lit it, Reika was standing right in front of him.

“Damn,” he said, jolting.

Reika laughed, then reached over to the hand that held the match. She plucked it from his fingers and then put it out with her own.

“We’re not going to need much of that, I don’t think,” she purred.

Reika pulled Owen’s head down, and they began to kiss passionately. He lost himself in her, like swimming in a deep ocean. Her body, her mind, her sounds of pleasure, her strength. It was difficult to remember how they had met and how much danger they were both truly in.

EIGHTEEN

REIKA

Reika didn't want to move from her place on the couch. Owen held her gently against his chest, and the silence was pleasant. She thought she loved the constant noise of the city, but she'd been wrong. She enjoyed the silence just as much.

"This is peaceful," she admitted, resting her head against his chest. She could hear his steady heartbeat, and she softly smiled.

Owen smirked. "Well, I'm glad you think so."

She looked at the plates they left on the table, too eager to get moving. They spent the morning in bed, way too comfortable, but Reika didn't care. When they finally did break away from each other, they had breakfast.

After that, they went outside for a hike, and after their walk, they relaxed on the couch and took a nap. After the nap, neither wanted to part from the other.

Owen sighed, "About our discussion at breakfast."

Reika thought back, wondering which part specifically he was referring to. They had many different topics.

"Which part?" she asked, pushing herself up and looking at him.

Owen sat up and turned to her. "About wanting to get away from your pack. Were you serious?"

"Were you?" she asked, suddenly worried he was going back on his words. She sometimes knew people said weird things when they first woke up.

"Yes, I was," he said, allowing Reika to take a breath in. "I don't want to be alpha, and I honestly don't want to be with the pack. The rules and restrictions they have are overbearing."

Reika understood. Her pack was the same, and there were plenty of days she was grateful she wasn't around them as much. But her pack wasn't as overbearing as his.

She liked the idea of them starting a new pack. It excited her. She liked the idea of being away from all the extra stress.

"I love the idea," she said, giving him a kiss on his forehead. "And we can discuss it more, but right now, I need some fresh air."

"I'll start dinner," he said with a beaming grin. "We can enjoy the quiet before we have visitors."

They both knew they would soon. Mateo was coming, after all, to update them on anything new. So, Reika turned and headed outside. She took in the fresh, open space.

It seemed the forest went on forever. She liked it and liked the idea of living out here. She wondered if they could stay or if they would find something new. Sure, she was leaving her old life behind, but this life seemed just as entertaining.

Reika was about to turn and go in when a car pulled up. She tilted her head, taking in the make and model. She squinted, seeing Mateo waving at her from inside. She rolled her eyes.

But just out the corner of her eyes, she saw someone move in the distance. Her entire body froze, and she looked once more. The person stood a reasonable distance away, half-hidden behind a tree. She tried not to stare, not wanting them to notice she noticed them.

Mateo jumped out of his car and walked up the stairs. "Owen inside?"

Reika nodded, keeping an eye on the person. She swallowed, suddenly realizing who it was. It was Connor.

They had been discovered, which meant they would need to leave immediately. Reika took a steady breath in before she rushed inside. Mateo was talking to Owen, and she needed him to go. She waited until Owen gave Mateo a nod.
