"I'll check in with you guys in the morning." Mateo gave her a grin before he went outside.

As soon as the door shut, Reika turned towards Owen. "We need to leave."

Owen looked at her, confused. "What do you mean? Why?"

She took a breath in, needing to remain calm. The last thing she needed was for both of them to freak out and somehow get caught when they were so close to being free.

"I was outside, and I saw Connor. I don't think he knew I saw him, but if he knows we are here, it won't be long before others follow."

Owen's face darkened, and he looked toward the window. "Where did you see him?"

"To the west," she said, nodding in the direction, "about a hundred meters back."

Owen frowned. "Was there anyone else with him?"

She shook her head. "Not that I saw. If there is, I'm guessing he arrived here first.”

"We need to leave now, and we tell no one. He must have followed Mateo, and he didn't even know. We can't have that happening again." Owen shook his head. "Pack light. We leave in five."

Reika moved, going into the kitchen and grabbing the necessary food they needed for a short trip. She grabbed a few extra blankets and some clothes his brother had brought over. She felt a little bad about leaving without telling anyone, but she knew it was for the best. They couldn't have anyone following them again. They could always call when they were safe.

"Did you get everything you need?" Owen asked, stepping into the bedroom where Reika stood, stuffing her bag. She nodded, doing another look over the room.

"Yes."

"Good, we leave through the back. I haven't seen Connor move, so I'm guessing he expects us to take a vehicle if we leave. We will walk."

Reika nodded, following behind him. But as much as she knew this was an answer, she had another. "What about the Lovell territory? My pack is open to this more than yours is."

Owen shook his head, opening the back door. He looked at her with a sad expression, "I don't want to involve them more than they already are, Reika. Besides, I don't want to endanger people that have no idea. So right now, let's do this. Okay?"

Reika nodded, knowing it was true. He was thinking of the entire picture, unlike her at the moment. She pulled her bag over her shoulders and allowed Owen to shut the door. They walked straight, neither speaking a word.

Reika said a silent prayer, hoping they had made it out without anyone following them this time.

Owen

As they hiked,Owen took them toward the northern mountains. As much as he enjoyed the view and getting free, he worried there wasn't enough distance between them and the packs.

He calculated the miles and just how far they could get each hour, but nothing seemed to fit. His worry grew each hour of them trekking.

"Hey," Reika spoke up, catching Owen's attention. He looked at her, and she tilted her head. "You okay? You seem off since we left the cabin."

He gave her a nod, looking back once more. He frowned. They needed more distance. He knew just how sensitive a wolf's nose was and didn't want the others catching their scent. He didn't even like the slimmest chance.

"We're making good distance," Reika said, pushing herself over a log. "Do you think we should head in that direction?" She pointed to the east. "Maybe going straight isn't the best option."

Owen shook his head. "No, we can't head into another pack’s territory. The last thing we need is to add another pack into this mix. So we keep heading straight."

Reika frowned as Owen was starting to get frustrated. He knew they had to leave, but he didn't expect it to be this hard. He thought they might have a little time before Connor found where they were.

They fell into silence, neither knowing what to say. Owen kept wondering when they were going to find them. He didn't want to lose Reika when he had only just found her. He hardly knew her, and he wanted to learn more about her.

They stopped as they came over a hill, seeing a small cabin. Reika squinted, looking at it, "Looks like someone abandoned it a while ago. I don't smell anything."

Owen nodded in agreement. "We should rest up. It's getting hot. We can decide what we want to do then."

They descended the hill, growing closer to the cabin. It had a small porch that wrapped around the house with busted windows. The door was half-open, so Owen went in first just in case something came out.
