Sable shook her head. "I don't understand some clans. There is no need for bloodshed." She gave Owen a pat on the arm. "You just rest up for the time being. I'm going to head out to grab a few things."

Sable left Owen and Reika alone. Reika looked at him. "The pack has been really nice since we arrived. Everyone has been so understanding about the situation."

"That's good. I was worried. You must have been scared with everything."

"I was." She nodded. "But they have been welcoming. They take in a lot of different wolves from other clans."

Owen liked to hear that because he wouldn't object to being adopted into this clan. They sounded like they fit right in.

"Well," Reika said, sitting closer to him. "I'm glad you're awake. You had me worried."

"I'm sorry," he said, cupping her face once more. "Let me make it up to you."

Reika leaned in, sealing their mouths in a gentle kiss. He missed her and hoped this was the turning point to a better way of life for them. He was tired of running and hiding.

TWENTY-ONE

REIKA

Reika and Owen summoned the courage to see the alpha leader of the Blue Pack, Torak. They were both cast out from their own packs and found great solace after being rescued by the Blue Pack, so they figured it would be fruitful to at least ask about settling down with them.

They approached in the evening after a pack meeting. Owen was still healing but managed to get to Torak’s private residence. He was sitting outside in the large backyard with his legs crossed in front of a fire.

Reika was nervous approaching another alpha, but she felt Owen grab her hand along the way as they walked through the grass. She couldn’t believe he was walking around after being so injured. Perhaps he was doing it for her, and she admired that greatly.

The man was older, of course, but looked very wise. He appeared to be meditating as they came over, and his eyes opened as they stood a few inches from the fire.

“Hello, Owen, Reika,” he said.

They held out their hands to him to shake, and he did, clasping their hands between both palms.

“It’s great to meet you,” Owen said.

“And both of you,” Torak said.

He met Reika’s eyes, then gave her a reassuring nod. It calmed her a bit.

“I am so glad we were able to help you,” Torak said softly. “What can I do for the both of you tonight?”

Reika could feel Owen hesitating, so she took a step forward.

“I think you know our story,” Reika began. “We are part of rival packs, and we had to leave due to a misunderstanding.”

She could feel Owen breathing lightly, his ribs still not completely healed.

“We wanted to see if you would welcome us into your pack,” Reika continued. “Since you were already so kind to us the other day.”

Torak remained still for a long time. Reika wasn’t completely sure he had heard her until he closed his eyes and shook his head side to side.

“I am glad we helped you,” he said softly. “But because you are of rival families, a battle has begun. We cannot be placed in the middle of that.”

Reika felt Owen brace himself next to her, and Torak instantly held his hands out.

“However, you can both stay until your mate is recovered,” Torak said. “Have no doubt about that.”

Reika opened her mouth and was planning on begging some more, but Owen touched her lower back to stop her.

“Thank you, Torak,” Owen said. “We will be on our way in no time. Thank you so much.”
