Owen felt him bite into his shoulder again, and he clawed at his father, feeling his nails sink into his father's skin. This time his father didn't step back. No, his father bit down harder, making Owen whimper.

Reika screamed, pleading for them to stop.

Owen finally freed himself and stepped back. He glared at his father, who only seemed to smirk back.Come on, Owen. Don't you remember anything I taught you? You know to never leave yourself open.

His father circled him, making Owen suddenly remember practicing this stuff with him before. Of course, he knew his father's patterns and methods like the back of his hand, so why was he struggling now? Owen was confused. Why was his dad giving him pointers? Why was his dad calmer than he expected him to be?

Owen looked around and noticed his brother standing a few feet away. Anger hit him over the fact that he had taken his son. He was the person that drove off with his son, leaving Reika to die in the street. He watched his brother narrow his eyes on him, just waiting to join the fight. He wondered if his brother would land the blow that killed him if he was given a chance. He looked back at his father.

Dernet rushed at Owen once more, snapping his teeth too close. Owen bounced back and growled.Give me what’s mine.

You want your son. You better take me down with the death bite.

Owen frowned. There was no way he was going to do that. He wasn't going to kill his father. He didn't have it in him.

No, he growled.

Dernet snapped at him and connected his teeth into Owen's shoulder once more. Reika screamed, and Owen shook himself free.

He stepped back.I will not!

He could hear his brother growling, and Reika cried harder, begging them still to stop. She pleaded they just wanted their son.

Dernet stood his ground. You're not taking your son unless it's over my dead body. You either give me the death bite, or you'll die trying.

It doesn't have to be this way,Owen said, his patience coming to an end, but his father charged him once more, not listening. Reika screamed as they collided once more, both snarling to stay on top. Either way, Owen knew he wasn't stopping until he got his son.

THIRTY-SIX

REIKA

Blood was everywhere, and she didn't know how Owen was still fighting. He was covered in bite marks with blood splattered through his fur. What made it worse was his father wasn't backing down. His father was dripping in blood and had a slight limp in his left back leg, but he kept fighting.

Owen was quick, but Dernet was faster. He kept hitting him in the same spots over and over, knowing it was weakening him.

Reika could only watch in horror, unable to stop them. There was nothing she could do but yell over and over that there was no need for this. She knew there had to be a better solution to everything than this.

Owen yelled at his father, and his father roared back. They kept charging each other, snapping their teeth like wild animals. A wave of tears fell freely as Reika tumbled to the ground.

She had never witnessed cold-blooded horror such as this. Sure, there were fights that broke out in the Lovell territory, and people got hurt. Blood was spilled, but nothing like this. They didn't attack each other wanting to kill. The Lovell wolves didn't walk around waiting for a death bite to strike.

This only drove Reika to want her son even more. She didn't want him growing up in this, thinking violence was the answer to solving problems. They could be getting along, rejoicing that there was a new member. They should be excited that they could bring the two packs together.

But instead, they were acting like animals. They were ripping at each other's throats because she was the enemy.

Owen! Reika yelled. Please, stop. Both of you. Please.

Dernet had Owen pinned, and he was crushing his airway. She expected him to end it and for Reika to lose everything. She could see Dernet had his mouth open, ready to take Owen's life. But instead, he didn't.

Owen shoved himself free and threw his father a few feet away. It seemed Owen was starting to run on fumes. Even then, he still refused to give his father the death bite.

Owen, she yelled once more, unable to do anything else.

Owen locked his eyes on Reika for a moment. She wanted to tell him this needed to end. She wanted to say this wasn't the story she wanted to tell their son. That neither pack wanted them and that Owen killed his father. This wasn't how the story was supposed to go.

Owen turned and, like lightning, shoved his father down hard onto the ground, landing on top of him. He pinned him down, and Dernet's eyes grew wide with shock. Owen hadn't pinned him yet, and this was the turning point. After that, there was no going back.

Owen dug his claws down into his father's neck, watching his father struggle for air.You did this! Owen yelled. All I asked for was my son! That's all I wanted! You were the one that turned this into a blood bath.
