“It looks like you need a shower,” she said.

Owen grinned. “I think you do, too,” he said, tugging at her clothes a little as he gave her a suggestive grin.

Reika giggled. “Okay, I suppose I could use one. Gunner is asleep.”

“Speaking of our adorable son,” Owen said, looking deep into Reika’s eyes. “How would you feel about trying for another?”

Reika turned her face up to his, letting him kiss her. Her body awakened for Owen just like it always did, but each time, the excitement was greater as if she literally couldn’t get enough of him.

“I’d love that,” she whispered. Owen slipped his arms around her waist and kissed her again, and Reika felt as if she had truly come home.

FORTY-THREE

OWEN

After he and Reika made love in the shower and then again in the bedroom, Owen stayed in bed with her for some time, just watching her sleep. He truly couldn’t get enough of looking at his beautiful wife, and simply lying in bed like this with her was one of his greatest pleasures.

He thought about his life before he met her, how he was always searching, always craving, so irresponsible and childish. The thrills that he chased never brought him the satisfaction he sought. Every stunt he pulled, every adventure he set out on, only fueled his desire for more, never quenching it.

Strange that he had attempted to find what he was lacking by jumping out of airplanes and climbing mountains and not in the arms of a good woman. Of course, it couldn’t have been just any woman … it was Reika he had been searching for his whole life.

Owen heard Gunner stirring and picked up his son and soothed him as he walked around the apartment. He knew Gunner soon would get hungry enough that he would have to wake Reika to feed him, but he would delay that moment as long as he could. It was very important to him that Reika get as much rest as she could, so her body could recover from the ordeal of the pregnancy.

He looked down into his son’s eyes, delighted by the smile on the baby’s face. When Gunner blinked and held out his little hands, Owen bent down and let Gunner pat his cheeks and pull on his eyebrows.

“Daddy loves you, Gunner,” he whispered. The baby cooed and laughed as if he knew exactly what Owen was saying.

Owen kept walking around, jiggling Gunner gently until the baby finally demanded food with a high-pitched wail. Owen hurried to the bedroom, where Reika was already stirring to answer Gunner’s cry.

“Oh, you brought him,” Reika said, putting a pillow behind her back so she could get comfortable to nurse the baby. “Thank you. I’d rather not get up.”

Owen stood and watched as she snuggled Gunner against her breast, and the little boy reached out with both hands, pressing against her as he latched on and began to feed. It was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t organize dinner,” Reika said. “If you just wait until he’s finished, I can …”

“No need!” Owen announced. “For I am headed to the kitchen right now to whip up a banquet of fanciful delights!”

Reika giggled, shaking her head. “I had no idea you were so flamboyant.”

Owen shrugged. “I was trying to imitate a celebrity chef. I guess I failed.”

“Can you cook like one, though?”

Owen shrugged, smiling. “Let’s find out.”

He headed to the kitchen, leaving Reika still chuckling to herself. Owen wasn’t a master in the kitchen, but he could cook a few things, and it was his duty … and his pleasure … to care for his mate and their baby.

While he threw together a salad and cooked pieces of steak, he checked his messages on his phone. There was a lot of pack business that was ongoing, and he’d never realized how much his father actually had to deal with. Owen had always thought it was boring business stuff and petty disputes.

There certainly was a lot of that, but there were daily inquiries and new jobs arising all the time. So much of it, he couldn’t delegate either. People had to have the approval of the alpha.

He replied to as many messages as he could, going back to check on the food every few minutes. His father had assured him multiple times that he’d get a grip on the business side of things. It would just take time.

Just as he was about to close his phone, a new message came up informing him that a different pack was closing in on their territory from the east. Owen messaged his brothers, sending them out to deal with it. He knew he’d have to follow up in the morning, but no one could blame him for signing off so he could be with Reika and Gunner.

Reika came out of the bedroom, and Owen brought the baby seat near the table so Gunner could see and hear them while they ate. He was pleased that Reika liked the food … he’d been prepared to order out if it turned out his cooking was terrible.

Life in the penthouse was a big change from wandering the city and staying where he pleased, but the biggest change was responsibility. Owen had never really had any before, even as the son of an alpha.
