“Yeah?” she pulled it out, handing it to him.

Had this been some elaborate way to ask her for her phone number? If it had been, it was the most creative. He slipped it from her hands and typed something onto the screen before handing it back to her.

“Meet me there.”

Before she could question him, he winked at her and jogged up the incline. “W-wait!” she called after him. He either didn’t hear her or didn’t want to listen because he continued to climb without stopping for a breath.

Reika looked around frantically for anyone passing by, seeing absolutely no one out this time of night. Of course, she’d attract the one nut-job who wanted to jump off the bridge to … what? Prove a point? Impress her?

She had no idea.

She squinted into the darkness, not being able to see Owen’s form any longer. What the hell was this guy on? He couldn’t actually be serious about jumping, could he?

Dark thoughts raced through her head the longer she stood there waiting for something to happen. Maybe he’d just met her to have someone to witness him killing himself. Or maybe he got a thrill from people watching him attempt to do dangerous stunts.

He did say that he was a stunt double; wasn’t that what they did for a living? Act insane for the money and attention?

She shook her head and set her wine glass on the brick wall that separated the steep drop into the water from the sidewalk at the bottom of the hill.

This was all way too much.

Out of the corner of her eye, she caught movement and strained her eyes to see in the darkness. She could see a figure underneath the lights shining on the bridge’s highway, pulling themself over the guardrails and between the tall support beams.

Vaguely, she recognized Owen’s shirt color, and her heart pounded inside her chest. No way … is he actually going to do it?He waved at her, giving some kind of gesture that was hard to see but almost looked like it was a thumbs up.

She shook her head at him and waved her arms. “Don’t!” she shouted. This guy was insane … or suicidal. She couldn’t decide which one he fit better.

Ignoring her again, he stepped between the support beams and spread his arms above him and then out to the side, almost like a professional diver would before taking the leap into the Olympic pool.

Reika let out one last breath before Owen careened himself off the side of the bridge and into the dark waters below, disappearing altogether. She screamed and flung herself over the brick wall. “Owen!”

She couldn’t see anything, nor could she hear the sound of someone breaking through the surface of the water and splashing around as they swam to the embankment. Around her, cars whizzed by on the highway crossing the bridge, none of them stopping to pull over.

She couldn’t believe it. He’d actually jumped.

Reika scrambled away from the edge of the wall, tipping her wine glass over the side of it and shattering it onto the sidewalk next to her.

She felt herself begin to panic.

What was she going to do? She couldn’t call the authorities and tell them. They’d think she’d walked him to his death and coerced him into jumping.

Plus, if her name was run through any local databases, her family would come looking for her, and that was the last thing she needed.

She fisted a hand in her hair and tugged at the roots.Holy shit, what the hell do I do?Reika lifted her phone and tapped the screen to turn it on. On it, her notes app was open with an address typed onto it. She scanned it over and over again, not familiar with it.

Why had he typed this into her phone? Did he want her to go there? Did he think his body was going to be washed up there and wanted her to warn someone about it?

It made her shake her head.

Whatever it was, she needed to see what the hell was going on.

Quickly heading back across the park, she spotted an Uber parked at the curb. The driver’s head bent over into his phone while he scrolled.

She popped the door open and stuck her head inside. “I need to get somewhere. You available?”

The man blinked at her. “Uh … yeah. I guess.”

“Great.” She slid into the back of the car and shoved her phone between the front two seats to show him the address typed onto her screen. “I need to go here.”
