“Hey, don’t fucking touch me! You don’t know what’s going on here!” He sputters as he tries to steady himself. I grab Madison by the waist and tuck her safely behind me.

Every part of me screams to beat the fuck out of this kid. My fists clench open and shut by my sides and my muscles tense. I lunge forward but Madison grabs my arms and pulls me back.

“No, Asher. He’s not worth it.”

“He deserves it.” I grind out and break free of her grasp. I raise my arm to swing but when I hear her gasp, I stop.

“She’s right. You’re not worth it. Treat a woman like that again though, and I won’t hold back. Learn some respect.” With a snarl, I turn on my heel, take Madison by the arm, and lead her outside.

Lots of girls and even a few guys clap as we walk out. “Woot! Thank you!”

“It’s about damn time someone told that loser off!” Another girl shouted.

As soon as we’re outside, Madison spins around and hugs me. She wraps her arms around me and pulls me in tight. “Thank you, thank you. I kept trying to get away.”

“Don’t have to thank me. I’m just glad I found you when I did.” I hug her back just as tight, loving the feel of her body against mine a little too much.

But how can I not?

It’s as if she was made for me.

We meld together like two perfect puzzle pieces.

But it doesn’t last long before we break apart, two separate solo pieces yet again.

“What a fucking jerk. I told him no so many times. And then he fooled me into coming inside for a drink, but we never made it to the kitchen. He just kept trying to pull me up the stairs.” Madison hugs herself now as she shivers, her hands rubbing up and down her bare arms. It’s a little chilly tonight and I wish I had a sweatshirt to offer her but I’ve got nothing.

I doubt her shivers are from the chilly air, though.

Fuck. I still want to punch that creep. Making women feel this way, making Madison feel this way.

I put an arm around her shoulders as we start our walk back home. We aren’t far from our apartments and I’m glad her place is close to mine. “You did nothing wrong.”

“I know. I just feel so…so…”

“Violated?”

“Yes, that’s it. The boy with little words yet knows the dictionary.” Madison cracks a smile.

“I might not say a lot. But it doesn’t mean the thoughts aren’t there.”

“Who are you explaining yourself to? Did we just meet tonight or something?” Mads teases but then her face turns serious. “I don’t want to go home yet.”

“Where do you want to go then?”

Madison stops walking and points across the street. “Our happy place.”

I grin. “That’s my girl.”

Madison pauses and I realize what I said. I mean I know what I said, but I realize I said it out loud. Shit.

“C’mon. The sand is calling us.” Madison laughs as she skips across the street like a little kid on their way to the candy store. If what I said affected her, she doesn’t show it and I’m thankful for that.

But damn. My resolve keeps slipping.

And if I’m not careful, soon everyone will figure out who my heart belongs to.
