“He’s hungover. But I’ll go.”

Saved again. I’m a lucky bastard. But how long until my luck runs out?

I need to put a plan in place.

Keep Madison at a distance, without making waves.

But how the hell do I do that?

The next afternoon, I meet up with Mason before his football game and catch a quick bite to eat.

“You ready to win tonight?”

Mason nods. “Hell yeah I am. We’ve been practicing hard all week.”

“Good. We need a win after last week's shit show.”

Mason laughs. “That’s because I was benched most of the game, so you know, of course we couldn’t win.”

I snort. “Oh yah that must be the reason why, huh?”

“You know it. Is everyone joining you later?”

“Yeah, the usual crowd.”

“Sienna should be there, too.”

I nod but he must see the look on my face I tried to hide.

“You don’t want Sienna to go?” Mason pops a fry into his mouth.

“I didn’t say that.”

“C’mon, Ash. I can read you like a book. What’s your deal with her, anyway?”

I shrug. “I don’t know, man. Maybe it’s just a girl thing but it always seems like drama follows her around and she enjoys it.”

“I could see how she comes off like that. But trust me, if she was in the drama twenty four seven, your boy wouldn’t be with her.”

“As long as you're happy, Mase. You know that’s all I care about. If you like her, then that’s that.”

Mason chuckles. “It’s that easy, yah? Then no more eye rolling and annoyed looks towards my girlfriend, bro.” He grins. He’s serious but he’s also just giving me shit like he always does.

I toss one of my fries at his head. “Yeah, yeah. It’s weird seeing you get all serious over a girl.”

“I’m not all serious. See?” He smiles with a mouthful of fries, half of them following out as potato mush.

“Ew, dude.”

“Oh my God, Mase. You’re disgusting.” Madison says as she walks up next to our table. Where did she come from?

“Hey, sis. Love ya too.”

“I thought you had to be at the football field by now?” Madison asks as she slides into the booth next to him.

Mason looks at his watch. “I got five minutes, Mads. Stop rushing me. Are you coming to see me play?”
