“Thanks, Mom.”

“Don’t thank me. If there’s one thing Mason’s death has taught your father and I, it’s that life is too short and way too precious. I am sorry for all of the pressures we put on you during high school. Do whatever you want to do, Madison. As long as it makes you happy, that’s all that matters. Spread those wings, my sweet daughter, and see the world. Make those memories for both of you.” She smiles through her tears.

My own cheeks are wet, her words resonating deep inside me.

“I promise I will.”

“Good.” She reaches across the table and squeezes my hand with her own. “Now what’s going on with Asher and you?”

“Nothing. Why?”

“A little birdie may have told me you two aren’t speaking.”

“A little birdie, huh? Is that little birdie’s name John?”

Mom laughs. “Where else do I get all of my information from?”

“I didn’t realize Dad talked to Asher.”

“Not often. Want to talk about it?”

I blow out a breath. “I just needed some space. Everything is so confusing.”

“You know, I always knew there was a little something more between you two. And I have a feeling Mason wasn’t having it, yes?”

I nod. “The last conversation I had with Mason was an argument about Asher.” It’s the first time I’ve confessed that to her.

“Aw, sweetie. I had no idea. But I think Mason would’ve come around. He always wanted you to be happy.”

“Yeah, maybe you’re right.”

Long after my mom disappears inside the house and I’ve had time to think about what she said, I open my journal and write.

There’s a huge hole in my heart from losing Mason. It’s a hole that’ll never be filled again.

But when I’m around Asher, that hole seems just a tiny bit smaller.

Maybe mom is right. Maybe Mason would’ve come around eventually.

I’d like to think he’d want me to be happy, even if that means being with Asher.

I open my eyes to find Mason smiling above me. There’s a bright white glow around him, so bright I have to squint to see.

“Hey brat. Let’s go running.”

“What? Mason? How are you here?”

“I still need to look good in heaven. Those angels are hot. And besides, I missed my sister.”

I’m so excited he’s here I don’t question it. I scramble out of bed, throw on some clothes and out the door we go.

We take the same path we always have.Along the shore and over to the football field.

The sun, the air, the ocean- it all looks more beautiful, more bright, and there’s a serene peacefulness.

Mason looks perfect, his smile big, his skin glowing.
