But as we run it’s different, because this time we aren’t quiet.

There’s excited chatter between us, like two old friends who just found each other again.

“I’ve missed you so much. How are you? Are you happy?”

“I am. I feel free and weightless, like I’m in a perfect paradise. But it would be more perfect with you and Asher by my side.”

“Did it hurt? Did you suffer?” I ask the questions I don’t really wanna know the answer to but I feel I need to.

“I didn’t. I died instantly on impact. I know the report said it was possible I was alive for a while, but I wasn’t.”

“Thank God. I was afraid you suffered. And I was so mad Asher didn’t turn around when I saw smoke at the bottom of the hill. ”

“Even if you had turned around, it would’ve been too late. I was already gone. So don’t sweat it anymore, sis. You know, it’s weird up here in heaven but I’m getting used to it.”

“I bet it is weird.” Relief courses through me now that I know he didn’t suffer.

“I feel bad for everyone, sis. Watching you all grieve for me isn’t fun. And I feel really bad for Sienna. I was a little too hard on her that night and said some mean things.”

“Go visit her and let her know.”

Mason shakes his head. “It doesn’t work like that.”

“What do you mean?”

Mason doesn’t answer. Instead he changes the subject.

“Why aren’t you talking to Asher?” He asks and my step falters.

How does he know that?

“I need space from him right now. The last conversation I had with you Mase, you didn’t agree with us being a couple. And it’s hard for me to be around him, especially now. I won’t break your promise, Mase.”

“Oh, Mads. You know that night I was angry with Sienna. I had been fighting with her all day, remember? I broke up with her that night and I wasn’t in a good headspace. I was more so worried about all of our friendships. And how if something happened, I would be put in the middle between the two most important people to me.”

He pauses before he continues. “But Asher is the best guy I know. And he’s the best guy to love my sister. It’s okay for you to love him, Madison.”

My heart leaps in my chest, racing from happiness and gratitude and sadness all at once.

“You really mean that?”

We arrive at the football field and stop running. Mason stands in front of me and pulls me in for a hug.

“I want to make sure you know you have my blessing. One hundred percent.”

Tears leak down the sides of my face and Mason brushes one away with his finger.

“Everything is so hard without you.” I say through sobs.

“I know. But I’m always here with you. Right by your side.”

“But…this isn’t fair. You should be here. Alive and with us. Experiencing life with us.”

“Don’t be sad for me anymore, Mads. Live your life and be happy. Get out there and do things for me, live lifefor me.”

“I’ll try.” My voice hiccups.

“We get our proper goodbye now, sis. So stop being a brat and tell your amazing brother how much you love him.”
