If Madison is surprised, she hides it well. She leans down and offers Sienna a hug who barely hugs her back, a mean look resting on her face. Again, Madison doesn’t react, acting as if she doesn’t notice, and I wonder what’s up. She certainly isn’t one to hold back.

I open my mouth to say something, a task I usually leave to others, but when I see how happy Mason is, I close it again. Maybe she’s just not a hugger.

But Madison is.

Always has been.

Like right now, when she slides into the booth next to me, looking flustered and almost perturbed, but still wraps her arms around me and pulls me close like she’s done so many times before.

Too many times to count.

Her hugs are my favorite moments.

My chance to touch her, if only for a brief second.

To smell her hair, to breathe in her scent.

All without her brother expecting a thing.

I know. It makes me a shit friend.

I hopelessly crush on my best friend’s sister. How could I?

But how could I not?

I’ll never forget the first time I started feeling something else towards her. A stir in my stomach, tingles in a place I never felt before. Only being twelve, I didn’t know what I was feeling. I’d known her since I was six yet at that moment, everything changed.

All I could think about was how I wanted to be close to her.

Mason and I’s friendship quickly grew and Madison loved to tag along, no matter how much it drove Mason crazy.

I may have acted like she drove me crazy too, but deep down, I loved every second she spent with us.

“What’s up? Nice to meet you, Sienna.” Madison says as she adjusts her messy bun on top of her head.

I love her casual athletic look, not a girly girl in any way.

“It’s Monday. Nothing’s good.” Mason says and Sienna laughs right on cue.

When Madison looks her way, I notice Sienna’s face changes, a dark look taking over her features.

What’s with this girl?

She looks at Madison as if she’s jealous of her. Does she not realize who she is?

Madison definitely notices this time because she looks at me and raises an eyebrow.

I shrug and shake my head. She can ask her brother what’s going on. I’m staying out of the petty drama.

“Sienna- what are you majoring in?” Madison pulls out an apple from her backpack and takes a big bite.

“Liberal arts.” Sienna says.

“She’s a senior, so she’s almost done. Lucky.” Mason grins. “My ass is riding on my football scholarship, unlike these two smartie pants.” Mason nods towards Madison and I.

“Asher is the smart one. Taking senior classes.” Mads elbows me in the side, a large smile on her face. But I see the tiredness in her eyes, the defeat hanging heavy on her shoulders. I know she’s struggling but she still cheers me on. And that I appreciate.

There aren’t many cheerleaders in my corner, but it is what it is. I rely on myself, that’s all I need.
