None of them looked up. Birgitta glanced between their faces, trying to see their expressions. She leaned forward, to Olivia, who was sitting the closest. As she leaned down, she stared into Olivia’s downturned eyes.

“I saidhello,” Birgitta said.

“We heard,” Olivia said, her gentle voice now harsh and cold.

“Are you serious?” Birgitta asked.

She wanted to sit down, to get her weight off the impossibly high shoes she was wearing, but the girls wouldn’t let her.

“You need to leave,” Sabina snapped.

Birgitta looked at her, not shocked at all by her tone. “Charming as always.”

“I agree,” Olivia said, her blue eyes finally turning up to look at Birgitta. “We know what you’ve done.”

Birgitta rolled her eyes.Of course they know what I’ve done.

“Don’t act like a child,” Sabina snapped. “You’ve gone too far this time.”

Birgitta felt a lump trying to break into her throat but she swallowed it down before it had time to take root and grow. She wasn’t going to let these bitches upset her.

“You should go,” Olivia said quietly. “We really don’t want you here.”

“Oh, you don’t?” Birgitta asked. “And why’s that?”

Sabina sighed. “You know why.”

“Because I’m happy for once?” Birgitta asked, involuntarily raising her voice. “Because for once I did something for myself?”

“Because you cheated on your husband and disowned your daughter,” Sabina snapped, her angry eyes burning holes into Birgitta’s face. “Youdisgustme.”

Birgitta scoffed. “Haven’t I always?”

As she shrugged on her coat, she stared around the table. These women—women she had once considered her closest friends—had made their choice abundantly clear.

“You think you’re all so perfect,” Birgitta spat. “I hope you never have to live the life I was living—miserable, alone, and unfulfilled. And, if you ever do, I hope you see sense quick enough to make yourself happy.”

None of them dared to look at her, aside from Sabina. She had always been the most ballsy, even if she was miserable as well. Birgitta shook her head slowly as she took one long, last look at her so-called friends.

Without another word, she whirled around and stormed out of the cafe. She could feel all of the heads turning to watch her leave. Instead of boosting her confidence, it made her feel worse.

Since when have eyes on me made me feel bad?Birgitta thought as she rushed out into the cool air of the city. Her head was spinning, she was so confused.

Not only had her family disappeared from her life, but her friends were doing the very same, too. As she walked toward the parking lot, her head turned down to the ground, she couldn’t help but wonder ifshewas the problem.

Was it her own fault for chasing her dreams? For doing what made her happy? Were her friends right to shun her?

She looked over her shoulder as she walked, gazing at the cafe. The building grew smaller in the distance as she walked away from it. Sadness crept into her heart as she walked away from the only friends she had ever had.

It felt like everything she’d ever believed was a lie. The romance books she ate up had filled her head with ideals. But the real world wasn’t like those Viktor Redreich novels. Now she was faced with a life without her daughter, a life without friends.

Although it pained her to realize that this was her life now, she knew that one thing in her life was going right. For the first time in years, she felt loved. She felt whole, complete. Malik brought vibrancy to her life that nothing else compared to.

All she wanted to do now was go home, to fall into his arms, and stay there for the rest of the day. He was all that she needed in life. If her friends and family were willing to drop her so easily, she knew that she shouldn’t worry about them.

She had someone in her life that cared about her, that chased her until he had her. Malik had given her something that no one else ever had—pure, unadulterated joy. She longed to be in his arms, to feel his skin pressed against hers, to feel his soft, wet lips on her body.

Birgitta quickened her pace, running as best as she could in her impossibly high heels.
