Taraven curls his body around me just as Malix comes, the two of them spilling inside. A frenzy of kisses erupts on my shoulders, both of them worshipping me, soothing me. Their hands are everywhere, stroking my hair as we melt together…as Taraven extracts himself from me and rolls to his side. I stay resting on Malix’s chest, letting him sit up and pull me over to the nest.

We go through the motions of cleaning up, getting under a thin blanket, tangling our limbs together for a night’s rest. I rest on Malix’s chest where he’s splayed out beside me, already asleep. Taraven curls up behind me, his tail holding both of us. I look back at him and find his glowing rose eyes, the firefern dimming until all I can see is the three of us embracing in the dark.

“You make me so happy,” I whisper.

Taraven smirks. “Was the lovemaking that good?”

“That, sure,” I snort. “But it’s really about…just you. Being yourself. And him being him. And the two of you embracing who I am.”

“What’s not to love?” Taraven asks.

I grin like a lovesick fool.

“Go to sleep,” Malix mumbles.

I swat him playfully in the shoulder and he cracks a smile.

And I finally drift off—to dream of flowers and my soulmates, and the future unfolding before us.

A future I’m fully confident that we will survive.
