“Is that another human figure of speech?” I ask.

“Yes,” he says. “And I trust you to figure it out yourself;Ineed to go and find my mate.”

He claps me on the shoulder, then heads toward camp, which I realize is somewhere behind us. I see the human agent—Mai Nguyen—meet him by a campfire and take him into her arms. They look happy…but also unhappy. Or, at least Reza does, giving me a glance backward.

That’s when I see it: worry.

Lucky and unlucky.

I suppose that’s war.

CHAPTER TWELVE

??

TARAVEN

For one whole night, I’m overjoyed.

Frankie leaves just after our tryst, but that doesn’t drain the heat from my limbs or douse the fire in my belly. Indeed, I can’t keep the pep out of my step when I board Jaya again and head to my quarters, still steeped in Frankie’s honeyed scent. When I curl up in bed that’s night, it’s her face on my mind, the memory of her hands on my chest as she rode me chasing me into oblivion.

Then there are the dreams.

Dreams of cool scales against my back, of Frankie’s cunt wrapped around my cock. And something pressing deep, deepinside, where only a mate belongs…

I wake in a sheen of sweat, the desire an unfathomable well within.

When I see Frankie again, she doesn’t speak to me. A whole meal goes by without us talking…then another. The next sleep cycle rolls around and we haven’t spoken a word.

I realize something is wrong.

I pull Bekah aside after dinner the following night, our journey to the Five Houses of the Divine almost complete. We only have one more stop to make, then Frankie, Malix, Ravik, and I will part ways with the rest of the crew.

It’s going to be awkward if I’m unable to resolve our situation.

It’s mydutyto tell.

After everyone else has left—including Zandro, despite how annoyed it made him—we sit at the table and share a drink. Bekah looks tired, and I feel a surge of guilt over it. I haven’t asked her how she’s been in ages, not since everything started happening with Malix and Frankie.

And now it’ssomuch more complicated.

“So what is it?” Bekah asks, clasping her hands in front of her. “I can’t imagine I have answers for…whatever it is that’s going on.”

“It’s about Frankie,” I say. “I…well, we made love.”

Bekah snorts, leaning back in her seat. “Finally.”

I frown. “You knew?”

“We’ve all been wondering,” Bekah says. “I mean, you two have been inseparable the past few months.”

“And friendship is possible between males and females, Bekah,” I chastise her.

“We’re friends, andwehad sex,” she says. “I honestly couldn’t figure out what was stopping you.”

“That was different,” I say.

She laughs. “So you just needed someone telling you what to do?”
