“My mother isn’t on this planet,” he says, “so she had to project her consciousness into Ivy’s.”

Margaret holds up an index finger. “Wait a minute. How did she even know Ivy needed help in the first place.” Damon’s mother raises her gaze to the sky hesitantly. “Are we being watched?”

“Possibly. I don’t know the exact answer to that question.”

“But you have to have a guess,” Boris eyes Jack with suspicion. He knows he isn’t being told the whole truth and he’s trying to find a way to make Jack tell him everything.

“It’s for your own safety that I can’t divulge certain things about my people,” he says. “I wish I was allowed to tell you more.”

“I see.” Boris’s disgruntled tone negates his words. He doesn’t see, and he doesn’t like being told half the truth. “Since Ivy has these powers now, does that mean your people will expect her to live with them?”

“That’s not happening,” I say without an ounce of doubt. “It doesn’t matter what they might expect. They would have to drag me kicking and screaming out of here.”

Boris smiles proudly. “That’s my girl.”

Jack clears his throat. “I don’t believe my people would force Ivy to live with them, but they will want to help teach her how to use her powers and not have them literally explode like they did earlier.”

“That would be helpful,” I admit sheepishly, “but there’s no way I’m leaving my family.”

“I understand.” Jack nods in acquiescence.

“So, what are we going to do about finding my son?” Margaret asks. “The bats took him, Nahla, Oliver, and Alek.”

“I don’t see how there’s much we can do at this point,” Boris says. “We know the general direction they flew, but after that, who knows where they ended up?”

“We can’t just not look for them,” I protest. “We have to try to find them.”

“I didn’t say we wouldn’t, poppet, but we need to keep our heads here. Running off might be the worst thing we can do. Damon and the others are smart. I’m sure they’ll find a way to escape the bats and make their way back here. I think we should keep to our plan and get to the top of this mountain. If the fae ship isn’t there, then we head west toward the setting sun and look for the others.”

“Even though I hate doing nothing,” Margaret says irritably, “I agree with Boris. Damon will do everything he can to get back to us. I have faith in my son to survive this, and so should you.”

“I’ll try.” My words are more for Margaret’s comfort than mine. I’ve been around her long enough to know that she’ll worry about Damon’s safety just like I will until we see him again.

“Can I be the one to tell Simon you’re his sister?” Boris asks with a hearty chuckle. “The look on his face will be priceless, and I desperately want to be the one responsible for it.”

“My sister?”

We all turn and see Simon eavesdropping on our conversation.

“Uh oh,” Boris says, “looks like the cat is out of the bag.”

Simon stares at me hard. “How areyoumy sister? What lies are you concocting?”

“It’s not a lie,” Jack answers for me. “Ivy is your half-sister and my daughter.”

Simon looks even more confused. “My mother never would have slept with someone like you.”

“Your mother and I loved one another. Why do you think your father kept me locked in that dungeon for all those years? He was punishing me for the affair. He never forgave me, but I didn’t need or want his forgiveness.”

“What proof do you have that Ivy is your daughter?” Simon counters.

“You saw the proof just now,” I say. “Rocks don’t just explode on their own. I did that. It was fae magic.”

“Then what’s the proof that my mother gave birth to you?” he asks, thinking he will have me stumped for an answer.

“The other night you told us that your mother was very sick before she died.” I swallow hard because this next part is difficult for me to say. “She died because she was pregnant with me.”

All the color and anger drains from Simon’s face. “She died because of you? How?” Realization seems to set in. “Did your curse kill her?”
