Nova scoffed but kept her thoughts to herself for once.

Cain unlocked the door, holding it open for Nova to enter first. Her anger at her father dissipated at the luxury laid out before her. She was used to staying in upscale hotels when they traveled but Crimson Moon Hideaway beat all.

“What should we do first?” Cain asked walking out of the bedroom shirtless. He raised his eyebrows suggestively.

Nova laughed, swatting at his muscular bare chest. She left her hand there and he pulled her forward kissing her. She deepened the kiss, running her hand down his hard body. Those workouts do wonders. Maybe I should go with him sometime. Why am I thinking about working out?

Cain broke the kiss but kept his arms around her. “As much as I would love to see where this would end up, I think we should freshen up and get down to the conference room. Then a nice dinner? This is probably our last bit of alone time for a month.”

She nodded. “I call the bathroom first.” She pulled away and ran to the bathroom. He laughed, following her with his eyes but lying back on the bed.

Skipper’s Steakhouse was elegant to say the least. Pristine white tablecloths with soft, flickering candles on each table. The servers were dressed in black pants and crisp white shirts. One full wall was floor to ceiling windows and the connecting wall had small port hole windows that matched the ship wheel decorating the dinning room. The couple stood at the host podium waiting to be seated. Cain rubbed his thumb across Nova’s finger’s as they held hands. The host led them to a cozy table close to the window wall. Small lights twinkled from the trees; Nova assumed it’s where the treehouses were. A server immediately appeared to take their drink order but the couple had looked a t the menu before they arrived and knew what they wanted.

Nova smiled at Cain once the server left their table. “I’m glad we get to do this together. There’s no one else I’d rather work with.”

“We’ve always worked well together. I think your father saw that in us years ago. Since the first senior science fair project we’d been partnered on.”

Nova threw her head back, laughing. “I’d almost forgotten about that. That’s the only time we got anything less than an A.”

“It still amazes me your father let us continue to work together after that B+.”

“You redeemed yourself in Arizona two years later.”

“Years are so short for us.”

“Sometimes.” Nova stared across the room. It had been thirty years since she had been turned and she had lived twenty-two years before that. There were days she felt as if she would be happy to roam this planet for another thousand years and then some days she felt as if there wasn’t anything left to entertain her. She knew the plans her father had for the next ten years. He wanted to run for Senate. Something he had yet to conquer. She would play the dutiful daughter, marry Cain in a lavish and grossly expensive wedding and they would take over the “Sober Living” organization her parents had grown over the last eighty years.

“What are you thinking about?” Cain asked her.

“The future I guess.”

“Our future?”

“My father’s plans for our future. Do you ever feel like you won’t be content running the coven and “Sober Living” for however long.”

Cain looked uneasy for the first time since he’d converted to the Lucid lifestyle.

“Cain?” Nova’s eyebrows were raised. “What is it?”

“I-”

“Good evening, Nova, Cain” Mr. and Mrs. Bryant had walked up to their table without either of them noticing.

Nova and Cain stood. “Hello sir.” Cain said, shaking his hand.

Nova hugged her mother and kissed her father on the cheek.

“Let’s all sit,” Mr. Bryant suggested.

“We’ve already ordered.” Nova sat back down.

“No bother. I’m sure the kitchen wouldn't mind holding our plates until your parent’s order is ready.” Cain smiled at Nova’s parents.

“Sure. Great. Please, sit with us.” Nova gestured to the empty chairs at their table.

“Oh, come on Beau. Let’s let the kids eat alone tonight. They have their work cut out for them.”
