Nova beamed at her mother.

“Nonsense. They don’t mind.” Mr. Bryant pulled a chair out for his wife. She sat, frowning at her daughter. The server appeared instantly to take their drink order.

“Can you bring a bottle of your most expensive red wine?” Nova asked when Mr. Bryant was finished ordering for himself and his wife.

“Absolutely.”

Both Cain and Mr. Bryant gave Nova the same look.

Mrs. Bryant cleared her throat. “How about this resort, right? It’s exquisite.”

“Opulent even,” Nova agreed. She and her mother fell into easy conversation about the weather and activities planned for the next thirty days. Mr. Bryant started to lay out his political plans for after this round of “Sober Living” retreats.Same old, same old, Nova thought to herself.

Lottie dragged her suitcase out of the Uber, waving Mayhew, the bellhop away.

“I’ve got it, kid. Have you seen Selena around today?” She asked, looking up at the tall skinny man before her.

“I think so but with everyone checking in today, I’ve been out here most of the day.”

“Thanks. I’ll look for her.”

“Hey Merry! Long time no see.” She smiled, waving at the woman checking guests in.

“Hey sweetie. It has been a while since you’ve been around. How’s everything going?”

“Good. Good. You?”

“Fantastic. Living in paradise will do that to you. Are you looking for Selena?”

“I’m, uh…” she scratched her face. “I’m checking in.”

“Oh! Well, let me look you up then.”

Lottie sniffed, scratched her head, and almost changed her mind about the retreat.

“Here we go. Room 319. Here’s your card. Your roommate already checked in and he’s adorable.” Merry handed over her key card.

“So I hear.” Lottie was relieved Merry hadn’t mentioned why she was staying at Crimson Moon Hideaway. “See you later.” She waved and walked toward the elevators, waiting with a small group of people. When the doors opened, Lottie watched as Nova and Cain stepped off the elevator, hand in hand. She ducked, hiding behind the man in front of her. What were they doing here? Was this some kind of weekend getaway for them?Lottie seethed as she waited for the elevator to stop at her floor. She followed two other people onto the third floor. No one spoke as they went to their respective rooms.

“Hi. Hello. I’m Vance.” Lottie watched as Vance fluttered across the room, hand extended.

She shook his hand noticing Merry was right, he was an absolutely adorable Fairy. It had been centuries since she’d spent time with the Fae.

“I’m-”

“Lottie. I know. But your friends call you Lots. You’re here to get sober. Me too. Except I’m trying to leave the nectar alone. Flower nectar. I’m not a bee. I met Selena. She’s a witch and she works here.” Lottie was smiling from ear to ear. Vance spoke so quickly she could just barely make out what he was saying.

“It’s so nice to meet you, Vance. Have you picked a bed yet?”

“No. Yes. Not really. Your choice.” Vance couldn’t stand still. He was in constant motion. She wondered if he had too much nectar or if this was the way he always was.

I’ll take the one on the left it that’s okay with you?”

“Yes, absolutely it is. Go ahead. That’s fine.”

“Thanks. I was going to go out and see if I could find Selena. Would you like to go with me?”
