“What makes you say that?”

Lottie hesitated. “She wants me to ask The Jovial if she can see her dad.”

Selena Turned to look her friend in the eyes. “This is why we’re worried.”

The barista set a carafe of coffee in front of them. “Do you need me to fill up the cream or sugar?”

Lottie shook her head, grabbing the carafe.

“Lots, can we continue this conversation?”

As they arrived back at their table, Nova stood, clinking a spoon against a mug.

“I appreciate you all being here for us. These last few weeks have been a whirlwind, but I really feel like this is where I belong. Lottie, I love you and don’t ever want to spend another second without. Will you marry me?”

There was a collective gasp around the table. No one spoke. Selena stared at Lottie, trying to make eye contact with her.

Lottie stood. “I can’t. I’m sorry.” Lottie left Nova standing there, the smile gone from her face.

###

By the time Lottie arrived back to their room, every trace of Nova was gone except a handwritten letter that had been left on the dresser.

Lottie-

The last few weeks have meant more to me than you’ll ever know but I’m glad you said no. I now know that we belong together, and I know someday we’ll find each other again. I need you to know two things. I genuinely love you and I had nothing to do with my father and Cain’s plans. I swear to you.

Next up for me, I’m going to do some soul searching, travel on my own, and then find The Jovial and plead my case. I need to work through this before I can work on us. You’ve taught me a lot in our short time together. I want to live my life in a way that is authentic to who I am, I just don’t know what that is yet.

Keep yourself well and safe. Don’t forget me.

With eternal love,

Nova

Lottie sat on the edge of the bed. Then, before she let herself get too depressed, she started packing her clothes. The best thing for her would be to get back to normal. She would finish out the semester, find a replacement librarian, then who knows, maybe she would finally go to Malta. There was a knock on her door as she zipped her last suitcase. Willa leaned against the door frame.

“What’s next?” Willa asked.

“Going back to CU, finish the semester, not sure after that.”

“Aye,” she nodded. “Sounds like a plan. Is there anything I can do for you? Are you okay?”

“I am, for now. Nova thinks we’ll end up together. I’m not so sure. All I can do is take it one day at a time and see what the future holds.”

“Aye.”

The End
