Page 18 of Kissed By Her

Once I cleaned up from my fabulous breakfast, I put on my favorite swimsuit, covered myself in sunscreen, threw on a kaftan and headed out to the beach to be with my buddies.

Joy was already lounging when I got there and I found her way on one side of the beach away from a lot of people.

I was huffing and puffing as I dragged my shit over the sand toward her.

“Did you have to be all the way over here?” I asked, dropping my chair and beach bag.

“It’s more private this way. Plus, fewer small children playing or tossing a frisbee in our faces.”

She did have a point.

I set up my chair and sat down with a sigh.

“I needed this,” I said.

“Don’t you live right next to a pool?”

“This is different,” I said, pulling my hat out of my bag and putting it on to protect my face from the sun. “The beach is just…good for the soul. Reminds us of how big the universe is.”

Joy gave me a look. “It’s too early for you to be waxing poetic like this.” She reached into her cooler and pulled out a cold drink.

“It’s never too early for me to wax poetic,” I said, putting my arms over my head and stretching.

“Why are you all the way over here?” someone called, and we both looked up to see Sydney dragging her stuff over the sand and looking disgruntled from behind her sunglasses.

“Privacy,” Joy said, getting up to help her.

Sydney sat down on my left and sighed with relief as she sat down in her chair.

“You just missed Layne writing poetry about the ocean,” Joy said, opening the cooler again.

“I wasn’t,” I told Syd.

“I need a minute to catch my breath,” Syd said, fanning herself. “Do you have any water?”

Joy tossed her a bottle and I grabbed a seltzer water for myself.

“Mmm, this is perfect,” Syd said, tipping her face up. “I don’t have to think about pottery dildos all day long.”

“You know, that could be a whole new avenue for your mom. Pottery after dark,” I said. “She could set up a secret room and you’d have to have a password to come in and see the naughty pots.”

Sydney snorted. “Don’t give her any ideas.”

“I got called a ‘peddler of filth’ the other day,” Joy said. “That was fun. Some guy got mad at a book with a shirtless dude on the cover. I told him that he shouldn’t buy it if it offended him. He ended up storming out in a huff. Some of these tourists have lost their minds.”

We sat for a while and bitched about tourists until we were sweaty, so we went to dip our toes into the ocean. The water was still cold as hell, but there were people swimming.

The three of us managed to get up to our knees and that was as far as we could go.

One of the swimmers started moving toward us and I thought I recognized her.

“Paige?” I asked. She put her hand up and squinted at me.

“Oh, hey! Hi Joy, hi Sydney.” She came closer and smiled. Paige was one of Kendra’s friends and lived in Castleton.

“Aren’t you cold?” Joy asked.

Paige shook her head. “Nope. I’m just built different. Hopefully this one will be too.” She put her hand on her expanding belly. I didn’t know how far along she was, but she was so petite that she looked like she was ready to pop at any moment.
